{Book Review} Bloodspell by Amalie Howard

I was offered a few of Amalie Howard's books to read and review!

I don't know if you remember or had a chance to pick up THE ALMOST GIRL, but you can read my review from when I first read that here.

I enjoyed Amalie Howard's writing when I read THE ALMOST GIRL, so I was looking forward to reading BLOODSPELL. Little did I know that I had it on my kindle this whole time from NetGalley. Oops. I have a lot of catching up to do!

I've had this on my kindle for a while from NetGalley. I'm a bad NetGalley reviewer. Basically, I requested a TON of things in rapid succession, expecting to be told NO, and yet I was told YES, and suddenly I have the delicious problem of drowning in ebooks. Then life happened and I got more behind. My profuse apologies to the author, the publisher, and netgalley for being so behind.

Okay, now that my apologies are out of the way, I have to say that paranormal is one of my favorite genres. So I'm already pre-disposed to liking this book. With that said, angsty teens are NOT my favorite genre. So I could've been pre-disposed to not liking this book.

I'm impressed that this was Amalie Howard's debut novel. It's really well wrought with a complex back history that bleeds throughout the story and unfolds bit by bit. Very nicely done. The angsty teenage girl nonsense was necessary given her age, but it kinda just reminds me as to why I do not like teen books.

Christian and Tori are an interesting mix, vampire and witch, old old old royal family and prophesied witch girl, this is power upon power and of course this will cause problems. Not just from Christian's family, but both halves of both worlds, because as we all know...people are greedy bastards.

I'm eager to dive into Bloodcraft, book 2, and see what has happened with Christian and Tori. I'm hoping that Leto has made a full recovery, Aunt Holly is protected, and that Angie & Tori are tight, close friends and bonded together, thereby protecting Angie and giving Tori another help.

Get a handle on what The Company is, what it means, look for all the subtle clues that have been woven throughout, and then get this book. This Sasha chapter. And then ask yourself: could you have survived?

Review: Blood and Bone by Tara Brown

Hot. Damn. Okay, I remember requesting and getting approved for this book through NetGalley, but with all the crap going on in my life, and per my usual, I didn't bother to reread the synopsis. So I jumped into this, ready to rock, and it was not what I expected at all.

It was much better than I expected.

I didn't know who she should trust, what was going truly, and then to find out that I didn't even know.... you know what? I won't spoil it for you.

Mystery? Check. Romance? Check. Suspense? Double check. Thriller? Check. Mindf**k? CHECK.

Sin and Swoon, a second book is coming out this summer and I cannot wait to get my greedy little hands on it. BLOOD AND BONE totally wowed me with a well-woven and well-wrought story. I flipped back a few pages on my kindle, convinced I missed something, convinced she (author) had to have given me a clue before...and nope! Fantastic!

Don't think this ends on a cliffhanger. It's tied up neatly. Wrapped tight. But definitely leaves room for another story or more and I can't wait to continue! In the meantime, I think I'll go hunt down some more Tara Brown books and start her other series. Cuz...Wow.

This review is long overdue. With medical crises and what is now my new life, my reading had been pushed to the wayside and I finally am picking up and getting my reviews out. My profuse apologies to Entangled Teen and the author for being so late when you so graciously granted me a review copy!

With that being said, now to the review. This deserves every single gold star I can give it. Let's start with the cover. I'm not a complete cover junkie, but I have to admit that covers can lure me in. This cover is stunning in its simplicity and totally drew me in, making me want to read.

But that cover is nothing to the story inside.

Loosely, you can consider this a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood. This is a fairy tale re-telling turned on its ear, made supernatural, and written in such a manner that you're gonna be guessing for most of the story.

I don't want to give away a single thing, so I will leave this review by saying: Ms Harvey...I hope you write more in this world. This was my introduction to your work and now I have to go add more of your books to my TBR.

Review: Wolf Bride by Elizabeth Moss

This was an offering on NetGalley that I had the pleasure of reading. It is an erotic historical romance set in the Tudor time period. While reading about the court and the names bandied about, I couldn't help but think of Horrible Histories and was kinda singing to myself, "Divorced, beheaded, and died. Divorced, beheaded, survived." Poor Anne Boleyn.

The couple consists of Lord Wolf, a decorated soldier for King Henry VIII, and Queen Anne Boleyn's lady-in-waiting, Eloise Tyrell. Wolf and Eloise were neighbors growing up, and this seems a sound match. I enjoyed reading their story as they got to know one another, I enjoyed the court intrigue and light politics as it affected them directly, and I enjoyed the side characters of her sister, father, and trusted friends close to Wolf and his Lady.

Book Review: EVER AFTER by Jude Deveraux -- coming June 30, 2015!

I got an offer to read this on Netgalley and since I've read Jude Deveraux novels in the past, I snatched up the opportunity. I haven't read a Deveraux novel in a long, long while. She was one of the very first romances I ever read and I fell in love. The bookmobile librarian was growing tired of me borrowing 30 books at a time and was fast running out of book recommendations for my 12 year old self. So she handed me two books: The Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught and The Black Lyon by Jude Deveraux. And from there, I was hooked on the Montgomery/Taggert clans.

Now it's been a while since my last Deveraux book. Life, different hobbies, different interests, have all gotten in the way, plus I've been devouring new authors left and right. This book was like coming home. When I first saw the last name of Taggert, I exclaimed, OH RIGHT TAGGERTS! MONTGOMERYS! WHEEEE! And then I settled in to be told a story as only Jude Deveraux can tell it.

Loved this book. I love these families and all of their stories and as names are revealed left and right, I remembered reading their stories once upon a time and their ancestors' stories, etc. I love how you can pick up any book that involves these two families and not be lost without getting a re-hash of a who is whom.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, I got to enjoy this before it comes out at the end of next month. And now I'll be scrambling for the other Nantucket stories and digging out my old Deveraux novels to get reacquainted.

A thoroughly enjoyable historical romance that embraces that American Dream/Horatio Alger Ragged Dick fantasy of rags to riches, although set across the pond in London. This isn't just a romance but a novel that tackles the idea of self-worth, both for females and males, and non-conformity.

Lucy and Trevor were childhood friends, struggling to survive in the a corner of the poorest section of town. Trevor always looked out for Lucy and Lucy only trusted Trevor. Determined to save her, Trevor takes advantage of overhearing something and shoves Lucy out to be the one selected, thereby saving her from being sold as a sex worker at a very young age by her own mother. Trevor makes his own way out of the gutter, but neither has forgotten the other.

I really enjoyed how this story was wrought: from interesting side characters, to multiple historical references, this was a romantic page turner that had many facets to enjoy.

The Cabin Goddess introduced me to Kory M Shrum's DYING FOR A LIVING when the author was offering Read to Review copies. And, being the lover of Urban Fantasy that I am, I snapped it up. IT SO DID NOT DISAPPOINT. It was a five star read for me (and dudes...it's currently free to read over at amazon: http://amzn.to/1amuAwY) and so was the second book, DYING BY THE HOUR.

It's not often that an author can keep the momentum going. But Kory M Shrum absolutely did with this third installment. This takes place along the same timeline as DYING BY THE HOUR, but told from Brinkley's point of view and with flashbacks that give you more to the story. It is seamless between flashbacks and the current timeline.

What I loved about this book, as with the others in the series, is how the author brings her characters to life with emotion. Heart-wrenching, eviscerating emotion. From sympathizing with Brinkley to aching for his heartache, to all the feels for Jackson, Shrum takes you on another ride from the very first page to the very last.

I will absolutely read on in this series. I cannot wait for the next installment!

This was a fantastic sequel to book one, Mary Hades. It picks up right after the events of the last book, but rather than continue the story line directly, we are moving forward and focusing on the next step in Mary's life, one that she had no choice about.

Moving.

Her parents have decided to house swap (permanently) with a little old lady who owns a rather large estate called Ravenwood. Both drawn to and kind of repelled by the house, Mary and her mother quickly become obsessed. With strange little things, an odd neighbor, and her BFF Lacey by her side, Mary is quickly pulled into the history of the house by way of a journal.

Lots of great tension and anxiety and a revelation about Mary's mom, this was a fab sequel to Mary Hades and I cannot wait to read the next installment!

This has been sitting on my kindle forever and I am using COYER as my excuse to get to these old Netgalley approvals. My sincerest apologies to the author and publisher for not getting to those series sooner!

I absolutely loved this book. Just when you think you're getting tired of one of your favorite genres, you pick up a book like this and you sigh with contentment as a fresh voice weaves you a story about the paranormal. Jessica is the ONLY female werewolf - born into a Pack, she was feared due to an old myth and protected by her fierce Alpha father against those who wanted her dead. She didn't change at puberty, but she sure did about 10 years later and that is enough to spark a war.

As bits and pieces of lore and history make their way known while Jessica is trying to come to terms with who she is, what she is, and what she is to do now, the suspense builds and builds. This was a kindle bruiser for sure and I leaped from this book right into book two.

And a good thing, too, as it was part of #2015HW for COYER Reading Assignment 2015! If you love werewolf stories and a strong female lead that isn't overly confident but no mewling wimp, start reading this series!

I was delighted to be offered a chance to read this book in exchange for a review. I've recently found a few books here and there that deal with reapers and have become more and more interested in this kind of storyline. Morbid? Perhaps. But I like that justice you see displayed and the compassion that often comes with it.

This book is no different when you're at the reaping part. Aaron displays great compassion for the recently deceased and there is fear for those who have to go to the Darkness. But the main storyline focuses around the new soon-to-be reaper and all that she discovers about the current Grim Reaper, her best friend, etc.

I think I am too old for this book and its demographic. While I enjoyed reading the novel, I tended to roll my eyes a lot especially when it came to one of her best friends and the fight ("If you don't know why I'm mad, then you're stupid!" etc.) or how Libbi's idea of fixing her best friend is to lie to him and tell him what he wants to hear or how, even after he causes her to get stitches from a display of violent temper, that violence is swept under the rug, especially when she learns about Aaron's past.  (Did you love that run-on? :D) I think I'm at the stage of my life where my tolerance for this is just absolutely gone.

I am not a fan of Kyle: I found him manipulative, I disliked his tendency towards violence (doesn't matter he didn't mean to hurt HER, he meant to hurt someone), and disliked his woe-is-me crap.

The ending could be termed a cliffhanger, but you could also read this as a standalone and fill in the "after" with your own imagination. If there's a second book for the "after", then hey! It was a cliffhanger! If not, then your imagination can take over.

The teasers had been driving me mad with hints of hilarity and sexiness. And I am happy to assure you that those teasers were completely lived up to. DIVINE AND DATELESS, the first book in the new Eternally Yours series, was funny, poignant, sexy, sweet, and will give you a new look at the afterlife. Where do you think you measure up? Level 2? Level 10? Uh, above or below? ;)

Ash was getting ready for her blind date when she had a little mishap. Twenty nine, unmarried, no children, and suddenly dead with the worst bad hair day a girl could imagine, Ash is none-too-pleased to discover that the hunkity-hunk is a Grim Reaper and there to escort her to the afterlife.

Ash's inner monologue will crack you up. As will her reactions to a clerical accounting error that land her in an awful job in the afterlife. The upshot? She has a smoking hot neighbor, Mr Grim himself.

I found her hilarious. Her Darwin-Award style death made me chuckle, her thought processes, smart mouth, and self-deprecation were lighthearted and funny, and her chemistry with Aedan nearly short-circuited my Kindle. Looking forward to the rest of this series and see how she works out in her new job and if she'll find a HEA with Aedan. I hope so!

 I can already hear the comparisons that people will be making in regards to R.M.Ridley's TOMORROW WENDELL. Paranormal Private Investigator is all they would need to hear before making that jump. And while I understand, please don't! 

Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. The story is fluid and fast-paced, the characters nuanced, everything shown as opposed to told. Jonathan Alvey is a magic-wielding paranormal private investigator, a functioning alcoholic, a magic addict who is constantly fighting down the addiction with other addictions, a good man who is struggling with a past, and hellbent on helping others. It's not for a paycheck, although of course that's nice as a guy needs to eat. It's because he CAN help and therefore feels he SHOULD help. 

I think what I liked best about this was its realism. Yes, yes, I know. Magic ain't real, kid. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm referring to the fact that this world is encumbered with nightmares from our fairy tales, legends, and myths. Perhaps if we all took a step to the left, we'd cross that barrier and see the things that Jonathan sees. 

Wendell Courtney is Jonathan's newest client and the title character. On an impulse, Wendell visits an antique shop near his dentist, slides a coin into a fortune telling machine, and receives a death sentence. He turns up in Jonathan's office, begging for help. As Jonathan begins to investigate, nothing makes sense. There are no magical traces of malicious intent. Completely puzzled, Jonathan is determined to save his client. 

With characters that are relatable, action that will have you rubbing your own stomach and ribs in sympathy, quirks that make him utterly likable, and an ending that will blow you away, this was one hell of a start to a series. I eagerly await the next installment and hope that Author R.M. Ridley writes fast!

 WARNING: This book leaves off on a cliff hanger. But you knew it would, right?

SOREN: The Angel & the Prizefighter is a YA /NA paranormal, angel story. I think the author, Louise Nicks, nailed it with this book as I found it very attention-grabbing and unique with its explanations of wing variations, who is whom among the angels, and the hints of prophecy. She also hit the nail on the head in regards to how children behave and bullying. Our heroine, a martial arts fighter, is being bullied due to her lack of money. I loved how this was handled although I think the end result was a bit fantastical. Ideal, but fantastical.

The love interest and how the relationship develops is nice. It was frustrating to see how many are against them, but I loved that their close friends came around and supported them, including the standoffish Braille.

I look forward to reading about each character as this series continues on. I'm being general because I don't want to let on what happens in the end, but there is a lot of movement that needs to happen. As as these movements occur, I'd like to learn more about the team of friends put together, Argo to get his head out of his feathered behind, and watch as the powers that be find their own!

 I love fantasy books like this where the story is complicated, the descriptions rich, and the characters so well-described you can see them in your mind's eye, with sinister looks, ethereal beauty, or what have you.

You can read the description, so I will do my best not to rehash it, but as you can see, there are two Englands. There is the mundane/original England in the world as we know it with a mad King George and then there is the Magi England. The Fury family is part of Magi England and this is where the bulk of the story takes place. To cross from one England into another, one must travel through the fog, something young Persephone Fury discovers when she is abducted by the house tutor, Vespasian. After escaping, she returns a changed woman with a secret. Falling in love with the man who helped her home, she makes her debutante ball looking surreal and gorgeous, helped by her brother Cosmos. There is a strange and weird tension between the Fury family members and I did a lot of puzzling over it in the beginning. I think what I loved most was the description of the Furys' powers. Oh, to have Persephone's gifts. I think every musically inclined person would find her gift amazing and desirable.

This is fantasy at its finest, with love and darkness, plight and opportunity, and complicated twists and turns that hinge on Persephone's decision making. Is it fate or is it destiny or is it choice? This is only book one so we don't know where it will lead us, but the words of her goddess ring ominous for Persephone. She can choose duty & honor or love, but not both. One will have to be enough, so which shall it be? I, for one, am hooked and can only urge Patricia Burroughs to write faster in hopes that I may read on!

I received a print ARC to read and review. My opinions are my own. I do urge you to get this on May 6, 2014 when it releases if you love a well built world with multi-faceted characters and a not so happily ever after...at least, not yet as far as I can see.
