{Book review} Half Black Soul by H.D. Gordon

Half Black Soul (The Alexa Montgomery Saga)Half Black Soul by H.D. Gordon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Man oh man am I glad I bought the omnibus. I read the first book BLOOD WARRIOR and then lamented that my book budget was at a limit and moved on from the book to other books in my TBR that were sitting and waiting for me. I've been dying to get back to Alexa and Nelly and bought the omnibus right before leaving on vacation.

I cannot tell you enough: buy this as the omnibus. Buy all four books at once or you will hate yourself. DO IT. Now.

So at the end of the first book, I was yelling at Alexa for leaving Nelly behind. "nooooo! Don't you know you're stronger together! STAHHHHP." H.D. Gordon knows how to write a story, man. This is most definitely a kindle bruiser. That's my own little phrase: I am hitting the kindle screen hard to get to the next page because I MUST READ MORE.

The relationship development and the unveiling of the world to Alexa is intense. Loved loved this book. Didn't stop reading. Gorged the whole series.

{Book Tour} Vampire Vic by Harris Gray - Book One.

“Victor Barton Thetherson has a self-esteem problem. His ex-wife bullies him. He is manager in a construction accounting firm, yet his staff makes fun of him. His teenaged daughter pretends not to know him. Moreover, she’s not above finding fake fathers to act on his behalf. It seems as if nothing is going well in his life. Oh, and he’s a vampire.”

Praise for the Series

“The writing in Vampire Vic is lively, smooth, and commercial.  Vic is an extremely sympathetic protagonist, and his struggle to unleash his true vampiric potential and assert himself is a struggle that a lot of readers can relate to. There is a great voice to the writing, and Vic’s internal emotional arc is well-developed.” - Judge, Writer’s Digest 21st Annual Self-Published Book Awards (score 24/25)

“A vampire’s entertaining journey of self-discovery.” - Kirkus Reviews

From Readers on Amazon and Goodreads

“Truly a great book about defining oneself.  Definite read for all of us looking for a new take on the old Vampire.”

"The author's fantastic character development and unusual plot kept me captivated from the
beginning to end. A nice entertaining read that I would recommend to all fantasy fans.”

“A fabulous book and one I would highly recommend.  Even if you think you are sick of vampires, please do yourself a favor and read this book. The writing style is unique and intriguing, and something I’m sure you will enjoy.”

“This unique book draws you in immediately with a storyline that hasn't been done before. The

character development is tremendous, leading the reader to feel compassion, empathy, sadness, anger, and humor throughout the book, because the characters are so relatable. In fact, some of the gut-wrenching difficulties we each go through in relationships are illustrated so vividly, that you forget this book is about a vampire! I found myself drawn to the humanness of Vic, yet rooting for him to bite people!”

Biography of Harris Gray

Harris Gray combines the writing talents of duo Allan Harris and Jason Gray. Together, they have written three novels, two screenplays, a Christmas play and a collection of stories from Jason’s younger days. An early version of their novel Java Man was a finalist in the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers contest.  Allan is a former guest columnist for The Denver Post and Jason owns Crowfoot Valley Coffee and Crowbar, land of rumor and embellishment.
Their collaboration began in Jason’s coffee shop. Allan wrote and eavesdropped as Jason entertained his customers. One day, Allan found a little yellow notepad waiting for him, crammed to the margins with Jason’s exploits. Allan typed them, touched them up, and called it good; but Jason had other ideas. As their tales converged and became inseparable, Harris Gray emerged. While the two couldn’t be more different in how they think and write, Harris says, “There is something wonderful and incredibly cohesive when we create a story together.” In Gray’s words, “We’re something less than Sybil and more than Siamese twins.”

Vampire Vic, the first installment in the darkly funny and relatable trilogy, launched in March 2013. Readers can add the follow-up, Vampire Vic2: Morbius Reborn, to their bookshelves this fall. Harris Gray also released their standalone novel Java Man in November 2013.

I'm on the tour and get to read BOTH books in this fresh series. Without rehashing the plot too much, I will tell you that Vic the Vampire isn't the vampire you expect. He's clinging to his humanity, refusing to drink blood that doesn't come from a blood bank, and is so...normal. He's wishywashy with a doormat personality that made it hard to like him initially. When you realize just how NORMAL he is, you start to pay attention more and start cheering for him to go and BITE someone. And then you have people you just want him to bite to death.

Rather than the sparkly vampires or the sexy warrior vampires that seem to define the paranormal genre, we have Vampire Vic...and somehow I think that, should vampirism be truth, this is how it would play out, completely with neighborhood slayer wanna be.

A vivid, funny tale of a newborn vampire who isn't very vicious at all...

This was another excellent volume to the Kitty series. The bad guys are badder than ever and the team of friends and characters are strong and solid. I love who Kitty is and her attitude towards the other things that go bump in the night, I love how she loves her pack and her friends, and I love her intrepid attitude no matter what she is facing down.

If you're a fan of the Kitty Norville series, this is a must read (I mean, really, why wouldn't you be continuing on anyway?)! And if you haven't been introduced yet to Kitty... well you could read this out of order and enjoy the hell out of it, but I think you're better served reading a few of the earlier ones at least if not all! The characters have depth and are multi-faceted as do the problems she encounters. And the characters and world builds beautifully as the story progresses throughout this series.

Vampires? Check. Werewolves? Check. Magic? Check. The Big Bad? Check. Gutsy heroine and hero(es)? CHECK. This series has it all and this latest in the series surely does not disappoint!

Blurb/Synopsis:
Mr. Sandman, send me a dream, ta da da da.....Seventeen year old Chasity Blake knows the Sandman is just a silly children's story parents tell their children to get them to sleep. At least she thought it was, until the day a mysterious, light golden sand appeared in her hands during a high school prank that went horribly wrong. A sand that has the power to send anyone it touches into a deep, sound sleep.
Fearing she had lost her mind, Chasity soon discovers the shocking truth of her heritage- she is a Dream Caster. Chasity was never supposed to be raised on the Domain, or what humans call Earth and she is forced to return to her true birth place, Revera – the world of Dreams.
However, in Revera there is no balance between good, the Light Casters, and darkness, the Shadow Casters, and Chasity is caught square in the middle. She soon learns that there is no place for anyone containing both the light and the darkness within them, and the shocking truth that if anyone in Revera ever discovered her shadow self, Chasity would be thrown into the Oblivion – the world of Nightmares.
Dreams are always more than they seem, and this time Chasity is going to discover just how different they can be.

"Crap, crap, crap,” were the only words that left my mouth as I took each painful step. Rollins knew just how to give ballet lessons that were straight from Nick’s pit. A stabbing pain ran up my calf and I had to stop as it went into a spasm. It should teach me to be late for class.
If it hadn’t been for Clare Bean, yip, her surname was Bean which led to plenty of teasing when she was little, I would’ve been on time. I would’ve had that extra ten minutes to stretch.
We had always been friends, Clare and I, since we were crawling around in diapers. Her house was a couple of houses down from mine and our moms were all too happy to bring us over for play dates. But since Ass and Abs had come into the picture, Taylor Winchester, Clare had gone all gaga and friendship didn’t seem to mean a thing to her anymore.
At first he hadn’t been too bad. He’d always had a thing for Clare but a month ago at his party, we were sort of trapped in the basement alone for a couple of minutes and he’d declared his ‘undying love and affection’ to me. Me, Chasity Blake, or just Chas as my friends call me, let me rephrase, my friends used to call me, as I’d rejected his affection, using finger quotes. Every girl my age knew what guys, especially the once that looked like Ty, meant when they declared their affection to you.
Clare was my best friend, what else was I supposed to do. I’d thought the idiot would feel like stinky feet and forget about it, but no, he thought that I should be taught a lesson, and told Clare that I’d made a move on him. She’d actually believed the dog.
Now for the past four weeks I’d had to endure their humiliation on a daily basis. First it was the posters on every locker with guys names crossed out. The entire baseball team from what it looked like, and the heading was Chasity Blake’s To Do List.
It was so lame, but coming from her, it hurt. It hurt a lot.
I thought everyone would forget about that in a week, but they didn’t and more rumors were added on.
Then came the exploding paint in my locker. I struggled to get the red paint out of my hair and had walked around with it for an entire week. My mom almost had a heart attack though, acted all strange and was ready to pack up and leave.
Today, they locked me in the girl’s bathroom. I crawled out the window, which wasn’t easy, and that was why I was late today.
Still, I tried to ignore it, even though it came from my best friend. Standing up to them would only cause more shit.
As I kept walking the fork in the road came nearer. One path led through the city. Five traffic lights with many twist and turns flashed though my head. The other road led past the lake. No traffic lights and it was a shorter route, but my mother disliked me taking those. Still today was the perfect day to make an exception.
I chose the lake and started to think about my crappy situation again and the regret of telling Mom not to pick me up from ballet had really started to bite me in the ass. Literally, it was like a tiny stabbing jolts of pain on my bum that ached with every step I took.
The next couple of years of school would probably suck if there wasn’t an end to Clare’s pranks soon and my father, sorry, step-father, Tim “the military man” Swanson, wasn’t going to move just because of the social life epidemic I was experiencing.
I never understood why Mom had married him. There wasn’t a time that I couldn’t remember Tim not being in our lives, but she was so different from him. She was a free spirit, loved to paint and for some reason she had a thing about dreams. She’s always asked me, since I was little, what I dreamt about the night before. It was creepy to people that didn’t know my mom but it didn’t bother me much.
Tim was easy to sum up. It was always YES SIR! and NO SIR! although he didn’t like the NO very much, and loved the HOW HIGH DO YOU WANT ME TO FREAK’N JUMP type of thing. Our relationship never used to be like that, but the older I got, the harder he became on me. Mom stood up for me a lot though, but I hated that they ended up fighting over stupid things I didn’t really want to do.
So lately my relationship with the only dad I knew was everything except the relationship a father and daughter should have.
Other family, I don’t have them. It was always just Tim and her.
As I was pondering my lack of family, something to the left caught my eye. It was parked right in front of the lake and my entire body felt as if someone had pulled a plug and let all the air out. It was Ty’s pick up, and I knew who else would be with him inside it.
When noises from Derek Benson came, I knew it wasn’t just the two of them, but the entire freak’n football team. They sometimes came here after practice and right now, I wished that I’d taken the other stupid road.
I watched as Clare’s figure jumped off his truck. She wasn’t as tall or as lean as me, thanks to the Asian blood that flowed through me, but she was not chubby either. She was medium built, not that there was anything wrong with it.
Here we go!
“Oh look, if it isn’t the baseball team’s slut,” Clare shouted loudly and everyone turned and laughed. If these were strangers that did this, it would’ve been different, but they weren’t; they used to be my friends. We used to laugh together, made jokes at the table and even pass notes around in class, even Nichole, she used to make up the rest of our little trio, had her nose in a teen magazine and pretended that nothing was about to happen.
I knew I should’ve just walked away, but today was different. I was tired, I ached from head to toe, I was in my freak’n tutu still, I’d just pulled my pants over my leotard and exchanged my ballet shoes for sneakers. I really didn’t have the time for her little charades of insecurity.
“The baseball team! Really? Now we know who has all the intellectual stem cells between the two of us,” I said and carried on walking.
“And who has all the grace and beauty,” Clare chirped.
“And also a shallow mind.” I couldn’t help myself. This is what happened when I started. It was like my mouth had its own passageway straight to my brain and I couldn’t do anything to switched it off.
“Oh, yeah, shallow minded. At least I know what loyalty means, bitch.”
I laughed again. “Loyalty. Can you even spell it, Clare?” Instant regret jumped through my core. Hurt rose briefly in Clare’s eyes but vanished just as fast. She was Dyslexic and I had been helping her with words ever since we were just tiny little things running around.
“I know how to spell slut, bitch, and skank.”
“Well, sorry to burst your bubble, sweetheart. I never did anything with Taylor, but wait, I tried to tell you that, and you still believed the son of a bitch.”

Adrienne Woods was born and raised in South Africa, where she still lives with her husband and two beautiful little girls. She always knew she was going to be a writer, but it only started to really happen about four years ago. In her free time―if she gets any because moms don’t really have free time―she loves to spend it with friends, whether it’s a girl’s night out, or just watching a movie. She’s a very chilled person. Her writing career started with Firebolt, book one in the Dragonian series. There will be four books in total, including a further two to three books, which will be stories that take place within the Dragonian series. Her other series, Dream Casters, will be released mid-2015. She also writes in different genres, and her woman’s fiction, The Pregnancy Diaries, will be published under a pseudonym. And then, she has a paranormal series by the name of the Aswang series, which will consist of about ten novels. And if that wasn’t enough, there is another series, Guardians of Monsters, which will be released in 2016.

Every author has a writing process. But what is your READING process? Favorite spot, must have a cup of tea or coffee or soda, or snack, or something? Please tell us your reading habit!

Mostly I read at night, in bed, before I go to sleep. If I start a book, I will do my best to finish it even if I’m not liking it all that much.  Often books start out slow and I end up getting into the characters and the story and I’m happy I continued to read.  If I don’t like a book at the outset, it may take me days and days to get into it.  If the writing is outright bad, I don’t continue, but I will know that in the first paragraph and don’t waste my time. Unfortunately, I’m a slow reader which means I can’t read as many books as I’d like.  If I love a book, however, I read for hours whenever and wherever.  I don’t need a favorite spot or cup of tea or coffee.  I just go for it.

Roberta L. Smith was born and raised in Southern California.  She is a graduate of the University of Redlands and lives in the High Desert with her husband.  She is an active member of the High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club.  Roberta had always been intrigued by the unexplained.  Her favorite stories growing up involved ghosts and sometimes the macabre. As a child, she wrote a letter to Boris Karloff telling him she knew he didn’t mean to kill the little girl in “Frankenstein,” so it’s no surprise that the four novels she has published thus far are in the paranormal genre.

Excerpt
PROLOGUE
Leadville, Colorado - 1924

I COULD FEEL Mother’s anxiety the moment she took my hand to pull me out of the canvas top touring car. I landed with a squishy sound as my boots hit the sloshy ground and I righted myself. The sight before me was forlorn to say the least: a couple of cabins―shacks really―a privy, shed and the hoist frame of a mine shaft no longer in use, all dusted with snow. It was spring, but just barely. And it was cold.
“You’ll be all right with the boy,” our driver called to my mother from his seat inside the car, arm outside the window, finger pointed. “Just remember what I told you. Call her Mrs. Tabor. She don’t like when people address her as Baby Doe. Show her respect. If she opens the door with a shotgun in her hand, just talk real nice. She guards the Matchless like a rabid dog and don’t trust people much. I ain’t sayin’ I blame her, just that’s how she be.”
Mother nodded and started toward one of the cabins, my hand in hers. I nearly cried out that she was hurting me, her grip was that tight. But I thought better of it. A tongue lashing would most likely result and that would be more painful. I stuck my free hand in the right-hand pocket of my coat and grabbed hold of one of the toy cars I kept there.
My heart beat rapidly. I was anxious, too. Not because of where we were or who we were about to meet. I was concerned for Mother because I’d never seen her in such a state. She paused for a moment and took several deep breaths as she stared at the small, one-room shack ahead of us. It cast a friendless feel out here on the hill amid the other wooden structures that were all part of the derelict mine. Constructed of planks that had weathered many winters, it wasn’t exactly ramshackle, but it was close. Not that I would have thought of that word at the time. I was six.
After a few more steps, my anxiety left me and the happiness I felt at being on a trip with Mother—just me, not my older brother Bobby nor my older sister Jane, just me—took hold. My siblings got most of Mother’s attention at home. With only me in tow, I would be foremost in her mind.
I looked at the front door of the cabin and “knowings” hopped into my head. Back then, that’s what I called the psychic thoughts that came to me. I knew we were about to meet an old woman who had been beautiful at one time. So beautiful that other people had been jealous. I knew that she was hated and that she lived alone.
I will just have a talk with that woman. So what if she’s peculiar, if they say she’s lost her marbles . . .
I glanced up at Mother. “Here, Mama,” I said, offering her a fistful of aggies and cat’s-eyes I kept stashed in my pocket along with the cars.
“What?” Her brows knit together as she looked at the contents of my hand.
“You said she lost her marbles. She can have these.”
Immediately my mother’s face turned to granite. I’d responded to something I thought she’d said aloud. “Why do you like to torment me?” There was a frantic undercurrent to her tone and the lines around her mouth deepened.
My heart seemed to freeze as it always did when I said something wrong and she glared at me with disapproval. La-la-la-laa. La. La . . . I sang in my head to block any more of her self-talk.
Mother took another step and the front door creaked open a few inches.
“Stop!” a sharp, clear voice rang out. “What do you want? Who’s that boy with you?”
Mother stalled. The word “ostracized” came to me. My brain changed the word to “ostrich-size” which made me think the woman we were about to meet was big like an ostrich.
Mother’s voice cracked when she spoke. “This is my son, Franklin.”
The door opened farther and my jaw dropped. We were in the presence of the old woman I had seen last night amid one of the strangest experiences that had ever happened to me.

{Book Review} Bound By Duty by Stormy Smith

Book Title: Bound By Duty
Author: Stormy Smith
Publisher: Perfect Storm Publishing
Publishing Date: July 2014
Length: 390 pages
Source: from author in exchange for an honest review

Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she's an Elder but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she's betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and she doesn't even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky Southern girl and to fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is and not what she'll be.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head or her heart win the battle?urb

I promised I was coming back with a review of Stormy's novel this month! And here I am!

Let's start with the bad: BOOK ENDED TOO SOON AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT BLOODY INSTALLMENT. Okay. That is now out of my system.

The Good: Uh...where do I start? This was such a great read for me. I love paranormal and I love romances and I love magic and I love monarchies and I love prophecies and and and. Yeah! There's a lot here!

Amelia is great. She's timid and weird and super shy. And as her life unravels piece by piece, as she discovers that every single person in her life has lied to her, she comes into her own and is livid. And yet, she maintains her cool and a keeps a level head, which is pretty amazing. This is not to say that she doesn't give a well-deserved blast here and there towards those who deserve it, but I found it amazing that she remained so relatively calm.

Even better than Amelia is her BFF, Bethany. FINALLY a BFF in a book that is a TRUE BFF. She rolls with the punches, isn't afraid to speak her mind, and yet takes the time to listen even when she wants to stomp someone in the face.

Stormy Smith has concocted a story that flows well, keeps you glued to what is going on, and has a menacing, looming, evil b--ch you itch to slap in the face. I was yelling at Amelia at the end to use her darn words and tell someone something instead of leaving it like so, but ... she didn't. And now I have to wait.

Write, Stormy, write!

{Book Review} JOE by H.D. Gordon

Book Title: Joe
Author: H.D. Gordon
Publisher: indie
Publishing Date: June 2012
Length: 268 pages (according to Amazon) or 336 pages (according to goodreads)
Source: Xpresso Book Tours review copy AND I bought a copy from amazon

A psychopath planning a massacre. A stuttering young girl with disturbing visions of the future. Six ordinary people who will all be in the line of fire come the day of the disaster.

Joe Knowe is not a boy. She is twenty-one years old, and she sees things before they happen; bad things, and the worst thing she has ever faced is just around the corner. A madman is going to shoot up the college Joe attends. The trouble is, her gift is stingy on the details she needs to divert the impending tragedy. Now, Joe has four days to figure out the mystery and save the lives of many.

From the author of The Alexa Montgomery Saga comes a tense tale that glimpses the mind of a genuine psychopath, follows an unlikely hero, and explores real-life terror in a race against time that will leave the reader breathless.

GOODREADS | AMAZON

Full Disclosure: This was a review opportunity through Xpresso Book Tours where you receive a book in exchange for an honest review. I also bought this book via Amazon.

I won't rehash the blurb as I tend to do that a lot. So you go ahead and read the blurb first. Go on! I'll wait.

Okay, so...this book is told from multiple points of view over the course of roughly three days. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in April 2012. Joe Knowe is gifted, or cursed depending on your point of view. She stresses over and over that she is not a hero. But of course she is. She is brave. I won't say fearless because you can't be brave AND fearless. Courage comes in the face of adversity, when you take action despite your fears. And THAT is Joe Knowe. She is amazing.

I really wasn't sure that I was going to like this book in the first few chapters when we switch points of view. It's not just two or three! There's Joe, there's Michael, there's John, there's Mina, there's The Decider, there's Eric, and there's Claire. All of their lives are connected via being students at UMMS. That is a TON of viewpoints and, frankly, I was approaching it with a frown, sure that I would get annoyed with it.

Instead, I was ensorcelled by H.D. Gordon's words and utterly mesmerized, with a constant ache in my stomach that indicates anxiety. Joe knows a massacre is coming and it's up to her to stop it. The Decider views himself as better than his idol, Hitler, and that he will achieve a new world order by killing thousands at his school and then off himself. As the tension built, I realized I was nearly 85% in and this was it...here it comes...

Gordon takes these view points and melds them together, each character picking up a thread from the other, and man...it was POWERFUL. It will leave you saying, holy shiitake! And at the end, I must say, I did not realize just how emotionally invested I was as tears formed in my eyes for Joe and the others affected. Amazing.

I'll be buying the next book for SURE and checking out H.D. Gordon's other books. She won me over in a couple hundred pages, easily, as a new fan!

Hi! I'm Milly (AKA April Angel) I love to write sexy stories. They're usually either paranormal or contemporary with a large dose of heat. My paranormal stories can be anything from wolf-shifters (my favorites) to witches, demons and anything in between. I was born the prettiest part of the Caribbean
known as the Dominican Republic. Currently, I live in New York City with my hubby, the bossy kiddo and our little dog "Needy Speedy". Don't ask.
When I'm not working some really long hours at the day job, or hanging out in the awful life-sucking invention known as Facebook, messaging my bestie in the UK or shopping with my sis Julie, then I can be found watching scary movies. Buuut when I'm not doing that, I'm usually writing because the voices won't shut up.
I am addicted to shoe shopping, chocolate (but who isn't, right?) and Dunkin' Donuts coffee.
Come by and visit me! I love to meet new readers!
