I don't even know how to start my review because a lot of what I want to talk about would spoil the book! Maybe I should just stick to the fact that DYING FOR A LIVING was a brilliant book and this is a fantastic follow up? :D
DYING BY THE HOUR picks up after the events in DYING FOR A LIVING. Jesse chose Lane for her relationship, causing Ally, her BFF and sometimes lover, to close out and back off. But Lane is harboring resentment because Jesse chose Ally in that basement. Sure, Lane has NRD now, but Jesse didn't know that at the time and it burns at him. So while she has to deal with nefarious plans from her father, a boss who is pretending to be dead, and the joys and woes of being a Replacement Agent, Jesse has lost her BFF and gained a BF who is prickly with hurt feelings.
The writing is just as good as the first book: it's well told, well built, and flows nicely. I normally don't like narratives that switch points of view because it can get confusing, but Kory M Shrum does it right and it flows naturally.
Shrum also knows how to make those characters believable. I was highly annoyed with Lane, wanting to punch him at one point, annoyed with Jesse, sympathizing with Ally, and wondering what the heck is all of this coming to. I think good writers are the ones that evoke emotion, even if it's simple loathing for a character and Kory Shrum is one of those writers. You end up caring for her characters and wondering what is going to happen to them around the corner.
If you loved DYING FOR A LIVING, this follow up comes out September 2nd. Not too much longer!

I've been struggling with writing this review because every time I tried, I was basically telling you every thing that happened in the book. Which is dumb. And spoiler-y.
There are a handful of authors out there who write 'erotica' and give you a story along with the sex. A story you WANT to read, you want to follow, and the sex is just like a spicy little bonus, a bonus that allows you to free your inner filthy, kinky self you never knew was lurking there.
JA Huss is one of those few. Erotica? Yes. Sinfully delicious and blush-worthy, yes. A story that isn't just filler fluff to get from one sex scene to another? Yes. Grace leaps off the page and has more than meets the eye. Vaughn is the same and I love how Grace calls him on his pomposity. Is that a word? If not, it is now.
Sex scenes? Hot. Risqué. Secret fantasy you never knew you had? Could be. From the small sample of early reviewers, we all agree on one thing: your panties might just melt and you may need a little date with B.O.B. Just sayin'.
Story? Delicious. Grace Kinsella is a filthy tweeter. She has a crush on @vaughnasher, a hollywood heartthrob and heir to Asher Productions. It's safe to tweet dirty things to him; it's not like he'll ever read them, know who @filthybluebird is, ever meet her face to face, etc.
Vaughn & Grace's interactions are fun. They're not only loaded with sexual innuendos and suggestive remarks, but there's also this feisty attitude Grace has as she laughs at Vaughn's desire to command her. She realizes she leans towards being a submissive, but she's also a thoroughly modern girl who isn't just gonna fall at the snap of his fingers. But she does a little, doesn't she?
There is more to Grace than we know. Vaughn notices it, too. She's hiding something and it seems like it might be something traumatic. Super hot weekend cut short by Grace as she rushes home, with a little bit of being Vaughn-like, a #thanksforthef**k, as she returns home, prepared to forget him.
As usual, JA Huss brings her characters to life. Can't you totally see this happening? The internet anonymity brings out the brash and brave within us, but what would you do when you're suddenly confronted with the object of your tweets?
I have a hard time with serials because I am SO impatient. But JA Huss's newest serial is like...tailor-made for impatient Huss-ies like me. Every 2 weeks, we get a new book. Those tight abs that just make you want to drag your tongue all over them to see if they taste as good as they look. And that package, boy. He’s never done any nudes so I have to use my imagination, but my imagination is vivid. I have a very clear picture.

I can already hear the comparisons that people will be making in regards to R.M.Ridley's TOMORROW WENDELL. Paranormal Private Investigator is all they would need to hear before making that jump. And while I understand, please don't! Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. The story is fluid and fast-paced, the characters nuanced, everything shown as opposed to told. Jonathan Alvey is a magic-wielding paranormal private investigator, a functioning alcoholic, a magic addict who is constantly fighting down the addiction with other addictions, a good man who is struggling with a past, and hellbent on helping others. It's not for a paycheck, although of course that's nice as a guy needs to eat. It's because he CAN help and therefore feels he SHOULD help.
I think what I liked best about this was its realism. Yes, yes, I know. Magic ain't real, kid. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm referring to the fact that this world is encumbered with nightmares from our fairy tales, legends, and myths. Perhaps if we all took a step to the left, we'd cross that barrier and see the things that Jonathan sees.
Wendell Courtney is Jonathan's newest client and the title character. On an impulse, Wendell visits an antique shop near his dentist, slides a coin into a fortune telling machine, and receives a death sentence. He turns up in Jonathan's office, begging for help. As Jonathan begins to investigate, nothing makes sense. There are no magical traces of malicious intent. Completely puzzled, Jonathan is determined to save his client.
With characters that are relatable, action that will have you rubbing your own stomach and ribs in sympathy, quirks that make him utterly likable, and an ending that will blow you away, this was one hell of a start to a series. I eagerly await the next installment and hope that Author R.M. Ridley writes fast!

This book by Stacey Rourke is one of those immensely satisfying re-tellings of one of the most famous American legends, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
I loved how it went back and forth from modern times to the story of Ichabod Crane and his two friends, Washington Irving and Rip Van Winkle. I loved the nods and following the storyline, but with Stacey's unique twist. Ireland Crane is feisty and demonstrates both her age and maturity in her responses. She is 24 years old, a new counselor at a school, and despite her education, her youth shines through in her smart aleck remarks and thoughts. I really liked her.
I loved Rip, too, and his addition as well as how the souls of those previous possess those in modern times for the shortest of bits. If you watched the show, SLEEPY HOLLOW, recently on TV, I think you'll enjoy this book. It has the same characteristics of a man from a different time who knows and fights things we brush off as legend. We all too often forget that in legends there are hints of truth!
Incredibly enjoyable, marred only by one or two edit hiccups, and rollicking with action, love interest, and legend, this was a fab read. I cannot wait for RAVEN, book 2.

Forcing the chaos in her mind away, Anna dipped her brush into the gray and stepped to the canvas.
Motion captured her attention from the corner of her eye.
The Dark Man, the subject of her recent paintings, stood in the doorway and leaned against the jamb.

Was this a vision? Another image she’d have to paint?
Her heart tripped into a sprint, and she couldn’t look away from him. Like the compulsion that forced her to paint these images, Anna couldn’t help but return his stare and memorize his masculine features. The sharp angles of his face, the harsh set of his mouth, the dark shadows around his even darker eyes.Black eyes. Blades of black hair hung low over his forehead and just touched the hooded shirt he wore under his short, scuffed leather jacket. He’d crossed his arms over his chest, and the position caused his biceps to bunch up under the worn leather. In fact, everything about him appeared worn—the coat, the threadbare jeans, the scuffed boots. None of it struck her as the kind of shabby chic you could buy in some upscale store for a small fortune, either. The whole effect was rough.
Dangerous. Deprived.

Frustration surged through her and tensed the muscles of her shoulders and neck. She didn’t want to be working on another of these paintings as it was, so the last thing she needed was to lose a bunch of time daydreaming. Or would it be daynightmaring?
As she stared at the blank canvas, the image of the shackled man behind the prison bars filled her
mind’s eye.
