This is one of those reviews where I have so much to gush about that I do not know where to start. And I don't want to gush too much and give ANYTHING away because I really hate when other reviewers do that. This book was AWESOME. Why was it so awesome? Where do I begin...

Larissa Ione, who I have not read before, builds her world so well that you can practically smell the scents, taste the desire for vengeance, and feel the emotions as they run the gamut. It is masterful. I read a TON of paranormal romances and many of those are about vampires. But none I have read were like this. Not only do you have this world that is seamlessly built from story-telling with a background that was shown and not told, but you are fully immersed immediately in the emotions of the main characters. You feel your sympathy rising as the story unfolds and you're silently cheering on your characters as you read. So yeah: the characters were well written, the world was built well, and I sank deep into this story and my reader zone and was happily there for a few hours.

I really loved the hints of vampire origin and where Larissa is taking us. It's different and new and well-defined, which I think is hard for any author to come to a genre that so many favor and bring something fresh to the plate. I loved it. I loved Riker & Nicole and their interactions. I loved watching them fight their prejudices and attraction to one another. I loved watching them fall for one another. I loved how it developed. I just plain loved and enjoyed the hell out of this book!

I think I may have given too many stars to book one of this series (I gave it 5 out of 5) because this one blew the first one out of the water. Just...wow. Not only do we get a continuation of the story, but we also get a more indepth view to the origin of the vampires and a romance story that packs a bigger punch. In case you're confused, please be assured that book one was NOT a cliffhanger. It's just that book 2 picks up nicely from a thread of book one with different characters.

Hunter has agreed to marry the rival clan leader's daughter. In his quest to protect her when she travels to his clan, he mistakenly grabs her twin sister, thinking it is his betrothed, and begins to fall for her as they hide and wait for a good time to return to his home. Determined to break the curse that plagues him, Hunter must negotiate three deadly tests with his chosen one at his side. While he has this worry on his mind, he also has politics, humans, and an annoying betrothed to deal with and the twin sister he's fallen for to win over.

The characters are better, the world building is better, this book just kinda grabs you by the ears and yanks you face first into its pages as you read. I really loved and enjoyed BOUND BY NIGHT, book one in this series and thought it would be impossible to top it, however I was proven wrong! Hunter and Aylin are perfect, absolutely perfect together. I loved getting more in depth to the mythos that Larissa Ione is building and cannot WAIT to read more in this series.

Then he released me, almost flinging me away from him. I pressed my back against the wall as I watched him and tried to catch my breath as my traitorous heart beat so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.

“Let me make this crystal clear for you,” he mimicked. “Kasey is like a brother to me and if you hurt him, you’ll wish you never met me.”

I don't even know how to start my review because a lot of what I want to talk about would spoil the book! Maybe I should just stick to the fact that DYING FOR A LIVING was a brilliant book and this is a fantastic follow up? :D

DYING BY THE HOUR picks up after the events in DYING FOR A LIVING. Jesse chose Lane for her relationship, causing Ally, her BFF and sometimes lover, to close out and back off. But Lane is harboring resentment because Jesse chose Ally in that basement. Sure, Lane has NRD now, but Jesse didn't know that at the time and it burns at him. So while she has to deal with nefarious plans from her father, a boss who is pretending to be dead, and the joys and woes of being a Replacement Agent, Jesse has lost her BFF and gained a BF who is prickly with hurt feelings.

The writing is just as good as the first book: it's well told, well built, and flows nicely. I normally don't like narratives that switch points of view because it can get confusing, but Kory M Shrum does it right and it flows naturally.

Shrum also knows how to make those characters believable. I was highly annoyed with Lane, wanting to punch him at one point, annoyed with Jesse, sympathizing with Ally, and wondering what the heck is all of this coming to. I think good writers are the ones that evoke emotion, even if it's simple loathing for a character and Kory Shrum is one of those writers. You end up caring for her characters and wondering what is going to happen to them around the corner.

If you loved DYING FOR A LIVING, this follow up comes out September 2nd. Not too much longer!

and seasons. In East of Ecstasy, hero Devlin Eston is the heir to the East Wind which has long

been associated with unluckiness, misfortune, and, thanks to Devlin’s father, even evil. Devlin himself has been the victim of father’s evil, and thereby finds himself an outcast among his own divine family. In this scene, heroine Annalise Fallston—who gets visions that she’s forced to paint in order to quiet them in her mind—sees Devlin for the first time. Here’s what she says:

Forcing the chaos in her mind away, Anna dipped her brush into the gray and stepped to the canvas.

Motion captured her attention from the corner of her eye.

The Dark Man, the subject of her recent paintings, stood in the doorway and leaned against the jamb.

Anna jumped and her pulse raced, but this time, anger flooded in instead of fear. “I will deal with you on my own damn terms,” she said, taking a perverse amount of pleasure from putting a figment of her imagination in its place. Because that’s all he was.

He didn’t move or speak. Not that he could, since, you know. Figment.Of.Imagination.

So just leave me alone.” She cut her gaze back to the expanse of white, but the desire to see if his image would still be there if she looked again drove her to distraction.

Finally, she gave in and…he was still there.

Completely still.Blatantly scowling.Totally unfathomable.

Was this a vision? Another image she’d have to paint?

Her heart tripped into a sprint, and she couldn’t look away from him. Like the compulsion that forced her to paint these images, Anna couldn’t help but return his stare and memorize his masculine features. The sharp angles of his face, the harsh set of his mouth, the dark shadows around his even darker eyes.Black eyes. Blades of black hair hung low over his forehead and just touched the hooded shirt he wore under his short, scuffed leather jacket. He’d crossed his arms over his chest, and the position caused his biceps to bunch up under the worn leather. In fact, everything about him appeared worn—the coat, the threadbare jeans, the scuffed boots. None of it struck her as the kind of shabby chic you could buy in some upscale store for a small fortune, either. The whole effect was rough.

Dangerous. Deprived.

Deprived? What a strange way of describing him. But as Anna’s gaze swept over him

again, the thought stuck. For his height, he seemed thin, with his lean hips, clad in old black jeans, a trim waist, and pronounced cheekbones. Her fingers twitched around the nearly forgotten paintbrush. What would it feel like to cup that harsh face in her hand?

Anna gasped and tore her gaze away. She had to blink to pull herself out of the haze of thoughts.

Frustration surged through her and tensed the muscles of her shoulders and neck. She didn’t want to be working on another of these paintings as it was, so the last thing she needed was to lose a bunch of time daydreaming. Or would it be daynightmaring?

As she stared at the blank canvas, the image of the shackled man behind the prison bars filled her

mind’s eye.

Definitely the latter.

Curiosity pulled her eyes to the left again. The doorway was empty.
