Book Spotlight: No Greater Illusion by K Baskett

Title: No Greater Illusion
Author: K. Baskett
Genre: Dystopian
Publisher: Self-published
Format: Ebook, Paperback
Length: 318 pages

Book Description:

In the very near future, surging advancements in technology have afforded American citizens with a number of conveniences. Of these, most notable is the SmartTag, a microchip embedded under the skin between index finger and thumb, housing all manner of personal information such as bank account details, medical history, voter registration and more.

This tightly-woven tale follows the lives of several very different people – Tealia, a free-spirited and intelligent photographer battling with conflicting emotions for her ex-lover; Mercer & Viera Scott, a power couple barely holding on to their marriage as the priorities of success and parenthood slowly become skewed between them; impoverished single mother, Naria, content with her reliance on both her current lover and government assistance to make ends meet; and the Holton family, wealthy beyond measure, enjoying carefree days of privilege and luxury.

Their status quo, however, is about to be undermined as America reacts violently to the brutal assassination of a highly esteemed female presidential nominee on the evening of the debates. As the entire nation struggles to make sense of the ensuing chaos, fear and distrust ramp up to dizzying heights. The end result is a series of grave consequences that will drastically alter life as they know it, making them all wonder how much of their world is but an illusion.

A captivating story that is at once gripping and dark, this brilliantly painted picture of a dystopian America cautions against the power of technology and the folly of taking anything for granted. Haunting and lyrical, No Greater Illusion is an astounding debut novel with a powerful message that lingers long after the final page is read.

Excerpt:

THAT NIGHT, I BECAME an eye witness to murder. The cop who pulled the trigger might have claimed it was “self-defense” or “protection from an imminent threat,” but all I saw was a 90-pound woman brandishing a lug wrench that was almost too heavy for her to lift.
“Conspiracy!” she yelled at the top of her lungs and used all of her might to swing the weapon at a nearby car, shattering the driver’s side window.
“Stand down,” ordered the nearest police officer in a booming voice, as he and countless others surveyed the entire riot scene unfolding before us.
“Never. We want justice,” the lady screamed, successfully breaking out the rear passenger’s side window this time. The officer made a move toward the woman and she turned to him, struggling for purchase as she raised the lug wrench over her head. A crazed expression morphed her face into a vacant wasteland, so that she appeared to be gazing at and through the officer at the same time, eyes and mouth sloping downward, gaping. She looked to be coming straight from the office, dressed conservatively in a pencil skirt and high heels, which I noticed because they were so inappropriate. Skinny as the tool in her hands, she posed little to no physical threat and could have easily been subdued by some other method, so I was surprised when the police officer drew his gun.
“I’m warning you. Stand down,” the officer growled, his eyes two hard pebbles of flint, sparking as he aimed the gun squarely at the woman’s heart.
She moved with no forewarning and surprising quickness. Like a lioness, she pounced, and got close enough to the officer to be able to see the color of his eyes before he fired his weapon. It was nothing like in the movies. His gun made more of a popping sound rather than a loud bang. In all the noise it could have been mistaken for something else, like a car backfiring or a tire exploding. She collapsed instantly, freefalling, slamming to the pavement with so much force her body seemed to bounce once before landing in a final thud, facedown, her fist still clutching a tool used for changing flat tires. Her entire back was a mass of gore from the exit wound, blood so dark it looked black in the low light, soaking her smart silk blouse and pooling around her body in an ever expanding puddle.
Even in the midst of the mayhem, there seemed to be an almost pure silence that descended over the immediate circle of people surrounding the woman’s corpse. Their stillness attracted even more attention than the gunshot and the crowd around the fallen woman grew. The officer began to slowly back up, a look of dread on his face. He spoke into his shoulder radio, “Two-forty-eight requesting backup at Sixth and Watson. Code thirty. I repeat: I need units at Sixth and Watson, immediately.”
The officer’s call for backup shifted the crowd’s focus from the dead woman to him.
“He did it,” someone spoke clearly from the group. “The cop.”
The officer continued to step backward, gingerly almost.
Another yell came from my right. “Ol’ racist ass cop!”
The crowd closed in and began to slowly advance toward the officer. I stood on the perimeter, not sure if I wanted to get involved.
“Fall back,” the officer ordered, pointing his gun into the crowd now, aiming in the general direction from where the slur came.
Various shouts rang out in response, more people getting agitated now and too many of them yelling at once to clearly decipher any one phrase.
“I will not hesitate to discharge my weapon,” he warned.
We see that, I thought. Obviously he was ready to pull the trigger yet again.
The closer the crowd got, the more the officer seemed to be losing his aura of authority, his confidence getting smothered by fear, his eyes now showing uncertainty where before there was boldness. Not a soul had responded to his call for backup. The city’s police force was sorely understaffed and everyone knew that in this chaos there weren’t nearly enough officers to go around. The gun trembled slightly in his hand as he pointed it at the closest target, a young black man in his early twenties advancing to the front of the crowd. He was shirtless, wearing nothing above the waist but several large black tattoos, his athletic body coiled with intent.
“Crooked cops,” the young man stated passionately, as a matter of fact. “I fucking hate the police.” He glanced back at the others and raised his voice with that last statement.
They thundered their hearty agreement.
“So what we gonna do about this racist motha fucka?” the young man snarled, having assumed leadership of the crowd by their earlier assent.
“Don’t try me,” the officer shrieked. He made another useless call for backup, panicked and on edge. The crowd had backed him into a wall and like any cornered animal he was ready to attack.
“Grab him!” The suggestion came in the form of a growl.
The young man sprang forward, all that tension uncoiling from his chiseled muscles in a single smooth leap. With a wild look in his eye, the officer pulled the trigger. In his agitation, he actually missed the young leader and instead his bullet found someone else who screamed out in agony as their flesh was torn. This indiscriminate shooting incited the crowd even more, and in the time it took the cop to fire another shot into the group, he was completely buried under a pile of angry bodies, swarming around him like bees to the hive.

Weeks into my early employment as a pastry chef, I had discovered that my, rather capricious, magic had been drawn to the pastry-creating process. Somehow my basic pastry skills and small gift in magic had combined to make me something more, a bit of a pastry genius.
Sometimes I thought that this exercising of my meager magic talent was the only reason my mother didn’t drag me kicking and screaming back to law school or into some ‘better’ profession, more suited to a child of her loins. Only here, with flour on my hands, did my magic really shine, sometimes quite literally.
My mother was proud of her long legacy of magic. In our quiet community she was considered to be the strongest practitioner in the entire Southwest. Her magic was of the Earth type. She could grow any plant in her extensive gardens. She could even start a small earthquake when truly annoyed (She didn’t ‘get angry.’ That would have suggested she didn’t have mastery of herself, which no one who knew her would ever even insinuate).
She had always blamed the capriciousness of my magic ability on the elusive father-figure I had never met. A long series of men had come into my mother’s life, and left, starting with my own father, whom she stayed resolutely silent about.
I had five half-sisters. Only the twins had the same father. Currently Mom was married to the head of the Western Magic Counsel, which meant she had been calling me with tons of ‘job opportunities’ she felt would be better for me than the bakery. The only thing that helped me keep my patience with her was that she always finished our conversations by asking me to send her a box of my goodies.
It tickled my vanity that even she couldn’t resist my baking.
My magic never worked the same way in two pastries. In some it could intensify flavors, others, well... my lemon meringue pie had a tendency to make people remember the very best day of their lives while they were eating it.

So, as I worked there was always a presence of magic in the air. It shimmered through everything in the bakery, enhancing, changing, and making sure every texture was right. My pie crusts were always perfect and my soufflés never fell. My oven always had exactly the right temperature, and I almost never burned anything.

A_TiffyFit's Review:
A Writer's Workshop indeed! I really have no idea how to review this book as it's a collection of essays geared at provoking thought and offering advice to a writer of science fiction/fantasy. It opens with an essay from one of my most favorite authors, Neil Gaiman answering the question every author on the planet is asked: Where do you get your ideas? Mr Gaiman says he used to use trite answers until visiting his (then) 7 year old daughter's classroom and decided those kids need an answer. The end answer? "I make them up." It made me laugh; there is more of course to his answer, but I will let you discover that on your own.

From there the next essay discusses subgenre within scifi/fantasy and as a blogger and reader, I really LOVED this essay! It helped to pinpoint things I'm reading that I don't quite know how to label for genre. Sword & Sorcery vs High/Epic vs Dark/Urban etc. And then we move on to beginnings, middles, endings, emotions, dialogues, etc.

Seriously...this is an invaluable resource for writers in my opinion. It has wonderful advice in it from authors and editors and contributors. If I were ever to try and take those ideas and attempt to write, I would have this at my side. From Ursula Le Guin to Neil Gaiman to James Gunn, these essays cover the spectrum and provide references to other works as examples.

About the Author

I started writing fiction when I was 15, and like most aspiring writers, my work was terrible, immature, cliched drivel. But I kept at it, even went to college for my creative writing degree before I understood how useless such degrees tend to be for real world applications. I also got used to the typical reject letters. Eventually, I needed annoying things like food, clothing and rent, so I got a real job and ended up finishing my degree in paramedicine.

Since then, I've gained 19+ years of experience as a paramedic, and that's after joining the army which paid for my degree. Of course, becoming a medic and honing the skills takes a lot of energy, so my writing got derailed for many years but never forgotten.

Then a wonderful thing happened. I woke up one morning with the fire to write fiction again. Sure, I'd written plenty of medical reports. I'd been published online by writing medical articles and was paid to write for a crafts blog, but I hadn't felt the particular desire to write fiction in nearly a decade.

I was back.

I haven't stopped writing fiction since Oct 2010, and I don't plan on stopping. In the last two years, I've written over a million words and counting. As of Oct 2012, I've got a half a dozen stories in progress and can barely keep up with my muse. Everything from science fiction, fantasy, fiction, psychological thrillers, historical fiction/action, horror, mystery and romance. If you enjoy my writing, then you can expect the unexpected.

Here's to second chances.

Book Tour: Screaming Spires, The Cavaliers Book 2 by Georgiana Derwent

Title: Screaming Spires: The Cavaliers Book II
Author: Georgiana Derwent
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, New Adult, Vampire
Release Date: April 12th 2013

A Tale of the Posh, the Privileged and the Paranormal...

The Cavaliers are the most elite society at Oxford University - rich, powerful, and beautiful. No one realises that they are no ordinary students, but a group of aristocratic vampires from the English Civil War. For four hundred years they have groomed the most promising students to run the government, police, and finance in the way the vampires wish, granting them eternal life in return for absolute obedience.

In her first year at Oxford University, Harriet French became inextricably tied to the Cavaliers. Now Harriet’s back at Oxford for her second year. Armed with a vampire boyfriend, some great friends and the truth, she’s expecting an easier time. She’s wrong. Her best friend is now a vampire and the Cavalier who turned her to save her life is facing death for the one good deed he’s ever done. Just when it seems that things can’t get any worse, the Cavaliers’ ancient enemies decide to strike at the heart of the society and they’ve got Harriet in their sights.

Screaming Spires continues the story of an ancient vampire conspiracy and the ordinary girl caught in its web begun in Oxford Blood.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Georgiana Derwent read History at Oxford University. Aside from the vampires, The Cavaliers Series is an exaggerated but fairly accurate portrayal of her time there. She now works in London and lives with her fiancé. He’s been very supportive throughout the writing of her books, mainly because he likes to claim that all the most attractive characters are based on him.

Georgiana fell in love with vampire novels after reading The Vampire Diaries back in 2000. At the time it was a struggle to find any similar paranormal romances, a situation that it’s fair to say seems to have been rectified in the last few years. She now loves paranormal series, fantasy novels, and modern literary works in roughly equal measure.

Ever since her teens, she wanted to write a vampire series. Ever since going to Oxford she wanted to write a book about her experiences there. During a dull few months between finishing university and starting her graduate job, she had the idea of combining the two and The Cavaliers Series was born.

A_TiffyFit's Review:
This book picks up right where we left off in "Oxford Blood." Harriet is now dating Tom, accepting and yet not accepting of the Cavaliers and vampire culture in Oxford, and basically coming to grips with the fact that her 'best friend' is now a vampire and her other friend, Olamide, is having a hard time recovering from her ex-boyfriend's, Callum, death.

I liked the history of the Cavaliers being presented, was fascinated to learn more about this Fea person, and really wanted to delve more into the depth of the story. Unfortunately, it's not there in this book as it just seems to be laying the ground work for book three. I found Harriet insipid and annoying this time around and the "romance" to be aggravating. Harriet does clean up her act a bit towards the end of this novel, but the first half was frustrating and juvenile. And Tom, too! In the first book, I rooted for Tom over George because I couldn't stand George's overbearing, condescending manner. It is a complete 180 this time around.

We finally get to see the Roundheads and are introduced to more of Augustine's, and therefore The Cavaliers, history. Not enough in my opinion, but the start is there. We also get to see some more immediate, recent history of Adelaide & Harriet's past. Again, I found the reactions of Adelaide to be over the top and juvenile. I felt as if I was suffering whiplash and was confused as to whether I supported her decision or wanted to throttle her instead. This happens twice: once in regards to her daughter, once in regards to her husband. I think most readers will find themselves interacting with this book: snorting, itching to smack characters, cheering them on,  etc. In my opinion, this is what makes a good book: your reader gets INVOLVED, even if it's out of frustration as opposed to sighing and oohing/aahing over their favorite characters.

I'm neither Team George or Team Tom. If I had to choose one, I'd go with George, but I'm hoping for a new character to come in Book III and sweep Harriet off her feet while not being condescending and helping her to "get" the vampire culture. I WANT her immersed in vamp society; I don't want her mesmerized out of it.

A_TiffyFit's Review
I worried I wasn't going to like this book in the beginning; childbirth scene, the things the mother was saying about being pregnant and not wanting the baby, etc were just so offputting. It made me recoil. How could a mother say something like that and if she had felt that way, why didn't she end it?! I worried for the baby, growing up unwanted and unloved. But then my interest was caught with the blue girl in the maternity room, the green goo, etc. Spiritual beings? Ghosts? Aliens?! I liked Lya immediately as we're introduced to her as a 16 year old girl, smiling over the mystical marks her grandmother, Nee, put all over her room. You understand that she has had a hard life with her parents and older, bitchy sister. As the situation progresses and you meet the three "angels" as Nee calls them, more and more is revealed to you bits at a time. Not much to be said about Lobsang as he's not really focused upon other than as his role as a Lotvian. Of the three warriors, B is my favorite. She is loyal, mischievous, and loving. Lya, the main character, was harder for me to like, which in the end, I thought was appropriate. She is the titular character, she should be more complex in appealing to my emotions as a reader.

I loved the concepts and the characters and the heavy eastern philosophy that the reader can see they were based upon. As you learn about Lya/Tsaen's history once on Ray (the planet they're from), you'll find yourself nodding along and saying, Ahhhhh, okay.
I think my absolute favorite characteristic of Rayans are their eyes! How I wish that human beings had that kind of indicator!
"...,the Rayan eyes act as an indicator of emotions. But unlike the birthmark, the eyes react in the moment. They are your nakedness. If you're lying, red will appear in your pupils. With anger, the pupils turn yellow. Concealing brings on green. true love, bright purple." -kindle loc 1871
Despite being told clearly that the change is in the pupils, I kept thinking it was the irises and had to remind myself it wasn't as I read descriptions of several character's eyes - deep mysterious blue, bright green, muddy brown. I kept asking myself, "wait! what does blue mean?" before I remembered that the indicator is in the pupils.

While it took me a little bit to become invested in the story, once I did the story rolled along at a very good pace. There is action, science fiction, emotion, and moments of frivolity that were just so appealing all together. A very good read, one I hope you pick up!

Fallen Ruler EXCERPT!

From above the hospital bed, with her body imbedded into the ceiling and veiled by shadows, a bald, blue-skinned girl watched, untouched by Carla’s plight. The blue girl’s dark, goggle-like eyelids reflected Carla’s image as she cursed those she felt were responsible for her predicament; not even God was spared.

The hospital nurses behind the desk across the hall continued doing their best to ignore the screaming woman. They believed the moment of birthing to be hours away and Carla’s angry words repulsed them. The blue girl had heard one of the nurses say such a poisonous woman like that shouldn’t even have a womb, much less be allowed to give birth. They had no intention of being kind to Carla.

Carla’s belly tensed and stayed peaked. The blue girl’s lids split open to reveal concerned human-shaped purple eyes. It was time to bring Tsaen out. She pursed her lips and blew down towards Carla’s head.

Carla closed her eyes and became silent. Her fingers relaxed their vice-like grip on the bed sheet.

The blue girl surfaced from within the ceiling and dropped down. She pressed her index finger against her navel, and just before touching the floor, she took the human form of a young Buddhist monk.

The monk stood next to the bed with his palms over Carla’s belly button. A glow spread throughout the swollen mound.

Carla moaned, turned her head, then settled back down.

The monk slid his hands across the soft skin, until they came to rest between Carla’s legs, just in time to support a tiny body enveloped in a pouch of green mucous. He bent over the baby. His mouth was inches from the green pouch when he sensed someone in the hall. He looked down and saw a shadow beneath the door, the nurse’s feet. They were small. It was the nurse called Sumana. The doorknob twisted. The monk realized Carla’s silence had caused concern. He placed the baby onto Carla’s stomach and slid towards the head of the bed. He touched his forehead to Carla’s and, using Carla’s voice, let out a loud scream, followed by a curse word. The shadow beneath the door grew small. The nurse had stepped back but she hadn’t left, nor had she released the doorknob. The monk screamed again.

Sumana seemed to hesitate. Her feet changed positions.

The monk waited.

Finally Sumana released the knob and retreated.

The monk pulled away from the sleeping Carla and went back to the baby. He lifted the baby from Carla’s belly and bit into the pouch, ripping off a piece of membrane with his teeth.

The loud sound of tearing disturbed Carla. She tried to open her eyes, but only managed a blink.

The monk swallowed the piece of membrane before ripping off another. A glistening head of thick black hair appeared. The monk continued until the baby was free. With a swipe of his hand, he severed the umbilical cord and carried the baby to the changing table.

A_TIFFYFIT'S REVIEW
This was an enjoyable paranormal (shifter) romance with some steamy scenes, faceted characters, and quick moving plot. I wasn't really expecting the book to pull me in and capture my attention and make me like the characters so quickly and completely! Little Josie is adorable and I loved how Shay instantly bonded with her.

I liked how it was instant action from the first page and how the reader can immediately sympathize with Shay - she's not a whiny, weak protagonist. She is a shifter after all! But, it still highlight the fact that no matter what, males will usually dominate over females in strength. Enter Travis to save Shay and help her recover from her injuries.

I liked the interactions between all of the characters: Shay & Travis, Shay & Travis' mother and daughter, the leopard/wolf pack, Shay's family. Shay's overprotective brothers are a hoot as you practically feel them glaring at Travis and grinding their teeth.

I totally thought Luna & her son were going to be sinister because of the exchanged looks, etc., but I was happy to read on and see what that was all about. Travis melds seamlessly into the fold of the combined pack and I can only imagine that future books in this series will deal with the Rogues and stomping them!

Definitely will want to read more in the series! The author has so many more ways to go with storylines with so many pack members!

BOOK TOUR REVIEW: Oxford Blood by Georgiana Derwent

Hello readers and fellow bloggers! So last week, I had the promo spotlight for book 2 of this series, Screaming Spires. And THIS week, I have it for Book 1 plus my review to get you a little caught up! Don't worry; I have a review coming for book 2 as well in the next few weeks! But first... OXFORD BLOOD!

Title: Oxford Blood
Series: The Cavaliers #1
Author: Georgiana Derwent
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, New Adult, Vampire
Publisher: self-published
Format: Ebook, Paperback
Length: 304 pages
Buy Links: Amazon |

Book Description:
A Tale of the Posh, the Privileged and the Paranormal...

The Cavaliers are the most elite society at Oxford University - rich, powerful, and beautiful. No one realises that they are no ordinary students, but a group of aristocratic vampires from the English Civil War. For four hundred years they have groomed the most promising students to run the government, police, and finance in the way the vampires wish, granting them eternal life in return for absolute obedience.

When Harriet French arrives at Oxford University from her working class northern state school, she’s prepared for a culture shock, but not to become embroiled in the Cavaliers’ scheming and bloodlust. Harriet thought she'd be busy enough juggling her demanding tutor, new friends, and the murky world of student politics. But now, she must find the rebel vampire who is killing off the members, stop the Cavaliers from orchestrating a massacre of the year’s most beautiful and successful students, and defy the Society to be with the man of her dreams.

Oxford Blood is a British, adult, paranormal romance. It's a tale with vampires that aren't afraid to kill and a heroine who's not afraid of sex or her own ambition.

A_TIFFYFIT'S REVIEW:
I REALLY got into this book fairly quickly and completely enjoyed it. Oxford, a magical place that I visited years ago and would love to go back, is the setting to this novel and I was so jealous of Harriet as she arrives: the excitement of being there, of her studies, of making it to Oxford, etc. Gorgeous, rich vampires with nary a bit of sparkles, that combination of lust, power, and bloodthirstiness, and yet they are still so refined in their traditions. I was instantly intrigued by the hot/cold of Tom and not quite sure what to make of it. As the story unfolds, I was amazed at the similarities between Adelaide's experience and Harriet's experience. I LOVED the explanation of the old boy network/establishment and how it is really a Cavaliers vampire thing. Fantastic! And I truly enjoyed how the author explained things to us the reader by explaining it to Harriet as well as the flashbacks to expand on what we're curious about. I felt that they were integrated seamlessly. There were a few editing errors, I noted, but it's nothing detrimental and doesn't knock you out of your reader zone. I think you realize that Harriet's idea is futile. I was shocked to discover her mother's part in everything; I expected her to be SOMETHING, but not what she is. And..I was leaning towards the culprit...and was right! The ending was satisfactory and closed this chapter of the story, but I DEFINITELY cannot wait to read the next, "Screaming Spires"!!!

About the Author:

EXCERPT

An avenue of ash trees stood like sentinels on each side of a pebbled path, which in turn led the eye to the large fountain at the end of the avenue. Cherubs were busy spitting droplets of water high into the air, before they fell with a splash into the bowl below.

"It's beautiful," breathed Beth.

"Behind the fountain is the lake," said Josh. "Would you like to see it?"

"Oh, I'd love to," said Beth and started walking down the steps. The sun was just beginning to get a little higher in the sky and she could feel the warmth on her back. She hoped they wouldn't stay out too long; her pale complexion made her prone to sunburn. Josh followed her down to the path and they strode briskly towards the lake.

They saw Ian when they'd reached the fountain; he was further down the garden, mowing the lawn on a red sit-on lawnmower. He waved at them, before turning and heading off in the opposite direction to them. Beth had never been inside a garden this big before, the small patch of grass and weeds at her aunt's hardly qualified compared to this.

The lake was as smooth as a sheet of glass, a few orange specks of sunlight reflected on the surface. On the opposite bank was a white wooden boathouse and jetty. Tied to the jetty was a small rowing boat, hardly moving at all in the water. Beth went closer to the lake, wanting to take a closer look. Small waves lapped against the shore with a gentle swish and she felt like she could stay there all day.

She looked round to talk to Josh, but he was nowhere to be seen. "Josh?" she called. No answer. The sky suddenly darkened, a blanket of grey clouds obscured the sun, and she shivered. "Josh?" she called again, worried now. Where had he gone? He was right behind her a minute ago. The waters of the lake began to move, whipped up in frenzy by the sudden wind; the boat bobbed as though it was being pushed by invisible hands.

There's something in the lake.

The thought appeared out of nowhere and she took a step back, away from the water.
But something had other ideas. Her feet seemed to move of their own accord, taking her further towards the shoreline. The waves weren't so gentle now and she felt her heart beating erratically against her chest. She didn't want to be here. She didn't want to look.
But look she did. She saw a face in the water. A face pale and grey; the red hair a stark contrast against the sallow features. She opened her mouth to scream, feeling chilled to the bone.

The face in the water wasn't hers.
