Synopsis
Change is never easy.
For seventeen year old Nicolette Vanelle, life is about to change...
Relocating to California, Nicolette finds herself starting over. A new high school. New friends. New life.
Attending her first Hollywood event, Nicolette meets bad boy Michael St. Clair, and unknowingly becomes the object of his obsession.
Feeling overwhelmed by Michael’s attention, she escapes the party to go to the beach where she meets Simon Paulson. He takes her breath away, an inevitable connection leading to romance between the young couple.
Nicolette and Simon’s happiness is short lived and their relationship is put to the ultimate test when tragedy befalls Nicolette.
Can Nicolette find the strength and courage to emerge from the darkness she fell into? Will Simon's unconditional love be enough to bring her back into the light?
Life can change in an instant, leaving you changed forever.
Excerpt:
The Paulson’s cabana was beautifully decorated, and
private enough for us to have some time together. Simon plugged in his I pod,
and asked me to dance with him. I was blushing, and he loved when I did that.
Simon held me in his arms, and our bodies swayed back and forth while he
whispered in my ear and ran soft kisses down my neck.
He felt incredible next to me, why couldn’t I trust
him enough to talk to him about Michael? I was afraid on how he would react.
Knowing his history with Michael was holding me back.
“You are so quiet, baby. What’s going through that
pretty little head right now?”
“I’m just happy Simon, I love dancing with you. You
always make me feel special and wanted.”
“Nicolette, you are special to me, I can’t even
begin to show how much I love, and want you.” Still holding me in his arms, I
knew what Simon had meant, he didn’t need to say the words to me. I already
knew he wanted to make love to me, and be my first.
Our bodies swayed back and forth to the soulful
sounds of Norah Jones. Simon, softly kissing and leaving love bites along my
neck. Closing my eyes, I was lost in him. Savoring every feeling, every stroke
of his tongue on my hot skin. In one swift move, Simon lifted me into his arms
and carried me over to the couch. My heart began to accelerate while my mind
raced with what Simon was going to do next. “Open your eyes baby. Nicolette, do
you trust me?”
Of course I do.
Slowly letting out my breath, I looked up at Simon.
“Yes.”
Without another word spoken, Simon began to unbutton
my blouse and run his hands over my lacy bra. “So beautiful” he said as he
kissed my covered breasts. Pulling me up, he slid my blouse off and unclasped
my bra, tossing them both to the floor. My upper body was completely exposed to
him, as his eyes perused over my naked chest. “You are so beautiful Nicolette.
We don’t have to do anything you’re not ready for. I just want to see and touch
what’s mine. Oh my…touch away. I reached for Simon and pulled him down
onto my body. Kissing and teasing his mouth with my tongue, while feeling his
hard length rub against me. Pools of wetness soaked my panties, my body
answering for me. Simon sat up on his knees, pulling his shirt off, exposing
his muscled tanned skin. I wanted to touch and kiss every inch of him,
especially his sculpted V muscle. I reached for his waist and he playfully
grabbed my hands.
“No baby. Tonight is for you, let me love you.”
Lying back down onto the couch, I lifted my pelvis for Simon to easily slide
down my shorts and panties. Parting my knees with his strong deft hands, I lay
open for him to explore my body. “Keep your eyes open for me, Nicolette. I want
you to watch as I make you come. Holy shit! This is it.
I was squirming with the anticipation. I completely
trusted Simon with my body. If anything I was too excited. I have been
fantasizing about this moment for a while now.
“Lie still baby.” Dropping his head down between my
legs he penetrated my folds with his tongue. Next he slid one finger in as my
body came undone. I gripped the sides of Simon’s head pushing him further into
me as a blinding sensation pulsed through me. I could hold on no more, and with
one last flick of his tongue, I exploded screaming his name from the most
intense and exhilarating feeling I have ever experienced.
Simon held me close to his body, placing his
forehead onto mine. Never taking his eyes off of me, he was smiling. You could
see his happiness all over his beautiful face.
“Thank you baby, for sharing your body and letting
me do that with you. I love how you respond to me. You can’t even imagine how
much it meant for me to do that with you. I love you so much baby, I thank god
every day for bringing you to me.” Simon had me wrapped around his body like a
vine. Holding me in his arms, we were simply loving each other. Simon had kept
his shorts on never pressuring me to go further. I could feel his erection
while his body was pressed into mine. Without a doubt in my mind, I wanted to
make love to him, and for Simon to be my first and only. Simon had drifted into
sleep while I lay awake in his arms. This was where I belonged, with Simon.
Bonus Scene
In an instant, life can change forever. How true this was for my beautiful girl, Nicolette. I watched her changed right before my very eyes. From a vibrant and self-assured seventeen year old, to a broken and shattered girl who had no light left in her caramel brown eyes. If I had only known sooner what she had been dealing with…I could have prevented the unforeseen act of brutality that awaited her. I allowed her to go to her mother and my brother while I lived my life in Chicago with no knowledge of him… the psychotic attacker, Michael St. Clair.
My world had been shattered with one phone call. All I saw was red! I wanted revenge on the person who hurt my girl. My hand was forced and that is something that never happens. I made a promise to my brother to believe that justice would prevail and the animal that hurt Nicolette would suffer for his crime. After months of watching her, existing and not living, trying to gain back some semblance of her life… was excruciating for me. She left us…her family, to find the strength she needed to be whole again. He took something from her that can never be replaced. Nicolette, as young as she was, was strong and determined. Although it broke my heart to say good-bye to her, I knew we had to let her go. She was battling through days of darkness and nights of despair. On the outside to others she appeared to be getting better but, on the inside she was struggling through darkness and pain.
She beguiled us all with her strength and courage. She found her light again, and returned home to us. She was not the same girl I said good-bye to months earlier. Nicolette was fearless, stronger, and determined to right the wrongs of what happened to her. I was too and I knew the promises I made to her father and my wife would have to be broken. I sat in the courtroom and listened to my girl re-live the events of that horrible night. She never cried, she just told her story all the while I clenched my jaw and tightened my fists. I wanted him dead, and that’s exactly what was going to happen…promise or not, he was going to die!
The judge issued the sentencing. He was handcuffed and taken back into custody. He dared one more glance at Nicolette and then turned his head down and followed the guards. Did he think this was over? No way in hell!
Nicolette was beaming with happiness. She did it. She faced her fears head on and was able to start to finally put this nightmare behind her. I watched her leave with Simon, the boy who captured her heart and loved her unconditionally. My brother and his wife were smiling for the first time in months. This was over for them, but just beginning for me.
I excused myself and pulled out my cell phone. I knew once I set this in motion, there would be no turning back. I hit the speed dial on my phone, and gave my orders. “He’s on his way. He is not to be touched, and will remain under the protection that I have provided until all is in place. Do I make myself clear?” I heard him answer, “Yes” and then I shut my phone.
I made sure he was unharmed in prison and never allowed him to be confident in knowing that he was untouchable. His first warning was waiting for him when he entered his cell for the first time.
Anticipation of death is worse than death itself.
I had several of these delivered to him over a course of several months. I wanted him to look over his shoulder… be afraid like the coward I knew he was. Then they stopped, and I was ready to strike.
I cashed in all my chips that were owed to me for this favor. I had only one chance to make this happen and today was the day. He was on laundry detail. The room was located on the lower floors of the prison, surrounded by loud sounds of the industrial machines. He was taken and bound to a chair with his mouth stuffed with a rag to silence his screams. Nestled out of sight in a dark corner of the room, I slowly crept in and approached him. His eyes were red from his cowardly tears that fell down his cheek and moaning for his life.
I leaned in to his ear and whispered. “Do you remember me?” He shakily nodded his head. I took in several deep breaths and began what would be the last words Michael St. Clair would ever hear.
“I could have ended your life that day in the hospital, but I didn’t. Every day Michael… I could have but, I didn’t. I watched you in the courtroom as you sat there, confidently thinking that you would get your sentence and still be able to live your life one day. Did you think that, Michael?”
He sat there with no emotion, and just listened to me. I circled him round and round, he didn’t move. “You made my girl bleed, you PIG. Do you remember what I said to you? Hmm…Pigs get slaughtered! You preyed upon an innocent girl, infected her with your seed and caused her undeniable pain. You robbed her…YOU BROKE HER! I can’t let you live one more day knowing that life awaits you outside of these walls, because they don’t.”
I removed his gag and I asked him one last question. “Do you have anything to say before fate comes for you?” He looked directly into my eyes, and said... “Do it! I can’t have her… I’m already in hell.” I plunged my blade into his heart with one strong thrust. He gasped, as his eyes slowly closed.
I watched as he bled out, and I let out the breath that I was holding. I swore I would never return to this life again, but after what happened to Nicolette, I knew there was no way I could ever live with knowing that the animal that hurt her still had breath in his lungs.

Blog Tour: DiSemblance by Shanae Branham--with review, excerpt, and giveaway!

DiSemblance
Jason Tanner’s life has always been different from the ordinary citizen’s. It started when he was an infant and his parents were only teenagers. A computer science prodigy, Lloyd attended MIT but left a pariah in the eyes of the school’s dean—but a computer physics genius in the eyes of his primary investor. Then his theories and ideas created a holographic machine and their world shrunk as contact with the outside world became less and less frequent. A computer prodigy now himself, Jason is about to learn that the world never waits for you if you have the ability to change it: it will come for you.
Detective Bruce Durante has been handed the case of the Comfort Killer, a serial killer so named because he appears to abduct terminally ill patients before returning their corpses to their families in refrigerated coffins. When he picks up the trail, it leads straight to the home of Lloyd Tanner.
Jason has been living life through the world of Lloyd’s invention and wishing he could carry on a relationship with Boston, the beautiful girl next door. When his father is murdered and framed as the Comfort Killer, he is brought back to reality in a hurry. He is forced to destroy all of the planted evidence—and finds he is being targeted as the killer’s new fall guy. But the secrets of his father’s invention run deep and Jason, his brother Isaac,Boston, the Comfort Killer, and Detective Durante hurtle towards one another on a deadly collision course that leaves everyone’s life hanging in the balance.
A_TiffyFit's Review: I don't even know how to label this book. It's sci-fi, it's contemporary, it's a detective/crime/thriller, and, it's awesome. Just awesome! I want a holodeck of my very own! How amazing would it be to have one?! Ahhhhh to this quasi-trekkie, that would be better than discovering true tribbles!
The beginning seems a little bit slow in comparison to the rest of the book, but only because the rest of the book FLIES. Jason comes across as so much older at times that you really forget that he's a scared kid. A brilliant kid, but still a kid. And Isaac...Isaac is damaged by his dad's invention, which only worsens at the end. After a thrilling adventure following Jason and Detective Durante, the bad guy is caught, the victims given peace, and there is a whole slew of side story angles Shanae Branham could go with. I really liked Bruce & Lisa's story and his solution at trying to get back on track with their marriage. I can't wait for the next book to see what lies in store for Jason, Boston, Isaac and Detective Durante!

For his kind is a dying race, and when this sleepy town has a sudden influx of new, blonde, fire wielders, no one is safe, especially Xander. It doesn't help that one of these blondes happens to be the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. Xander can't deny the instant connection he feels to her so, when she tries to kill him, it certainly makes things complicated.
A_TiffyFit's Review: Xander is so incredibly NORMAL with his "I don't know what I want to be when I grow up". Luckily (luckily? hmmm) for him that kind of decision making is taken away from him and he no longer has to worry about anything "normal." His density has long been set out by merely having been born. Although he holds resentment towards his parents and grandfather for not being told of his roots sooner, he soon gets hold of what his responsibilities are, not just to his family but to the world by virtue of his birthright.
Xander hones his sense of duty and the sense of protection he has towards all of humanity, and therefore the world, and sets his mind and heart to do just that: protect them all. With the help of his "extended" family, he learns what his powers' limitations are and trains hard in his aim to protect the world from the destructive element, the Fire Warriors. Too soon, the battles ensue and along the way, he meets the girl of his destiny, the love of his life, and joins their powers and love to fight off the rogue fire group.
Wind Warrior's premise seems simple: boy meets a girl, love is destined, evil versus good. It is this very simplicity that weaves such a strong, compelling story that entertains. I'd recommend this book to any reader who dreams of love, powers, and fending off evil for the sake of all that's good in the world!

The sleepy town of White Halls harbors a dangerous secret. On a picturesque street, two houses down from a lovely little park, in a quaint little home with a wraparound porch, lives a family that seems rather normal. Sure, their twenty year old son, Xander, still lives at home, but he's going to college and dating the leader of the schools top sorority. It's all very... normal. However, when a man is miraculously saved from being hit by a bus, Xander's life turns in to the living embodiment of the tornadoes he can suddenly create with a flick of his wrist. Whether he wants this gift or not, Xander must learn to use his new 'super power' quickly if he wants to survive. Xander stood in the center of the field. From the periphery, standing well away near the tree line that lined the edge of the field, Sean watched Xander stretch his arms out wide. Xander closed his eyes and tilted his head backward.“Are you ready for this?” Xander called. “Whatever this is, sure, I’m ready.” Xander heard the musical whisper of the wind as it called to him. Like a snake through the safari, the wind slithered between the tall grasses, causing them to sway and dance in rhythm. The wind kicked up around him, pulling at his clothes and hair. As the wind increased, it buffeted him from side to side, nearly causing him to lose his balance.
The sensation was like magic to Xander. The energy of the wind caressed his skinlike an old lover. It enveloped him where he stood and seemed to pour through his open mouth, filling him with its energy. When he was satisfied with the demonstration, he exhaled, forcing the soothing winds from his lungs.
As quickly as the wind began, it died away, leaving Xander standing alone again in the middle of the field. He lowered his arms and turned excitedly toward Sean.
“Did you see it?” “See what?” Xander gestured behind him, and then turned in a tight circle. “The wind.”
“The wind,” Sean replied flatly.
“Did you see the wind blowing through the field? That was me.”
“You made a breeze? That’s what you’re telling me? That’s what was so important? Xander, I love you like a brother, but I break wind all the time without having to drag you out to a field to see me do it.”
Xander frowned at his friend’s disbelief. “Fine. I was going for a small demonstration but if you want big, we’ll do big.”
Xander returned to the center of the field and held his arms outstretched again. He closed his eyes but quickly opened one to peer at his friend. Sean leaned against the trunk of one of the trees, his arms crossed defensively in front of him. “You’re going to want to back up for this one.”
Sean turned around and looked behind him. “I’m already at the trees. I can’t go much further back.”
“Get... I don’t know. Get behind a tree.”
“You want me to hide behind a tree while you break wind again?”
“Will you just do it?” Xander said, exasperated.
Tossing his hands in the air, Sean walked around to the backside of the tree he had been leaning against. “Is this good enough?”
“Thank you.” Xander assumed his position in the field once again, lifting his arms straight out from his side. “Come on, wind... spirit,” he whispered quietly enough that Sean wouldn’t hear him. “Let’s give him something memorable.”
Instead of slithering through the grass like it did last time, the wind pounced on Xander like a lion. It roared into the field and crashed into Xander. He staggered as the wind took up a dance around him. He quickly opened his eyes as a wall of wind formed around him, swirling like the birth of a tornado. The grass around him stood strangely still but the wind filled the rest of the field. Every exhaled breath came out of Xander’s mouth in a puff of smoke as the temperature plummeted around him.
As the wind swirled faster and faster, he saw cans and bottles emerging from the grass. Like puppets being controlled by a skillful marionette, the debris danced in the wind. It got caught up in the swirling madness and became part of the ever-expanding swirl of air.
Xander’s ears popped as the air pressure increased. He tried to call out for Sean, or even laugh at the excitement of the moment, but the maddening wind stole away his words as soon as they left his mouth. Instead, he tilted his head back and laughed silently into the swirling maelstrom.
The increased air pressure drew the heavier objects out of the tall weeds. A rusted hubcap emerged, followed by a dilapidated car radiator. They joined the rest of the debris in its swirl, spinning in increasingly fast circles as the whipping wind reached near gale- force strength.
The hubcap flew dangerously close to him as it spun past. It was gone from his peripheral vision as quickly as it had appeared. When it reappeared, it was quite a bit further away, nearly to the distant trees. Like a projectile shot out of a cannon, the hubcap slammed into one of the trees, embedding itself deeply into the coarse wood.
Startled, Xander broke his concentration. For a moment, the cans and bottles slowed their spin before hanging in the air. They collapsed onto the ground as the last of the magic dissipated from the air.
“Sean?” Xander called out, suddenly worried for his friend. If the hubcap had enough force to bury itself into the thick wood, he was worried about what any of the other smaller items would have done to his friend. “Sean!”
“That was so freaking cool,” Sean yelled, emerging from behind one of the trees. “That was so freaking cool!”
Xander sighed happily at the sight of his heavyset friend. “See, I told you hiding behind the tree was a good idea.”
“That was so freaking cool!” Sean yelled again as he bounded through the thick grass. He crashed into Xander, enveloping him in a bear hug. “How did you do that?”

Snap. The sound from behind stopped her heart. She dared to turn around. Two glowing rubies, only feet away, rode up and down as the creature advanced on four legs.
Beware the red eyes. The boy’s whisper broke through. They are the eyes of death for you and the ones you love. They will not rest until yours are closed forever. His image played in her head for only a millisecond, but it filled her with courage. Her heart picked up pace and, with arms out at her sides, hands moving in frantic rhythm, she managed to stay on her feet.
She sensed each passing second could be her last when she heard the creature’s rhythmic breathing roll up from her heels. Just then, the red moon revealed an abrupt end to the forest a short distance ahead. In a few steps, her fate would be in the hands of gravity. Trust! That was her grappling hook as she threw herself over the edge and tumbled into the darkness below.
The beast followed down the steep embankment and stopped a few feet away. She got to her feet and allowed the wolf-like creature another step. Its red eyes stared up at her. The head dropped between its shoulders. Its weight shifted to its hindquarters. The muscles of hunter and prey simultaneously tensed. The animal growled and exposed a set of long, yellow teeth. Saliva fell in strings from razor-sharp incisors. Unable to move, she watched as it lunged, jaws open wide. She put her hands in front of her and took a step back. Her left foot fell upon air, and then ... she plummeted into emptiness.

When Cepheus, a dark god, forces seventeen-year-old Ally Ashworth off an isolated overlook, she has no idea she's falling into his world, or that the necklace she’s wearing is actually a key - one with the power to ignite the next world war. But she’s carried beyond his reach and into the one place where he’s powerless ... the forest of Gilgamesh.
Ally’s never been Miss Popularity, but her outsider status takes on new meaning when she’s rescued by Liam Cheveyo and his peculiar friends. After seeing them shape-shift into their freaky humanimal counterparts, Ally smacks hard into a few truths: magic really does exist and, although getting here took no effort, finding her way back might be impossible. Feelings between her and Liam begin to grow along with the realization that, in this world, she’s stronger, better ... until she’s caught in a trap set by the creepy spider-boy Cepheus sends to retrieve her. But Ally’s not going down without a fight, not after learning the horrible truth about the passageways.
The survival of both worlds depends on it.
And here's a casting Top Ten from Cindy for her characters!
Top Ten Actors to play my characters in the movie version of Double Star:
Meg – Hayley Williams of Paramore
I came across a picture of her while I was creating Meg’s character and loved her look.
Thea – Maggie Smith
She’s definitely been typecast into the wise, sage role and I see no reason to change that!
Caleb – Jonathon Rhys Meyers
He has really great eyes and can certainly look the bad boy part!
Cepheus – Johnny Depp
Who else can look so sinister but, at the same time, so cute and godlike!
Ian – Corbin Bleu
With longer hair and green eyes, he’d make the perfect Ian!
Oisin- Joe Jonas
I hate to admit this but when I saw Joe Jonas on the cover of Rolling Stone a few years back, I knew he would make the perfect Oisin! He’s dark, sultry and definitely a chick magnet! Oh, to be young again!
Shane- Clay Matthews
He’d have to cut his hair (Oh, no!), turn back the clock a few years but I think he’d make a perfect Shane!
Corm- Alex Pettyfer
He definitely has the “Corm” look!
Liam – David Garrett
He’s always been my Liam! As a matter of fact, I’m going to have bumper stickers made up that read “Looking for Liam.”
Ally - A young Evan Rachel Wood.
She has an innocent type of beauty that really personifies Ally.
CINDY SAUNDERS was born in Lowell, MA. She moved to RI almost twenty-five years ago and now considers the Ocean State her home. She graduated from Bryant College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. When she’s not reading, writing, spending time with her two teenage children (how did that happen?) or working, Cindy tracks down one of her favorite local bands and enjoys a glass of wine. She completed her first novel, Double Star, a YA fantasy, in October 2012 and is currently working on the second book in the series.
Double Star is her first novel.
A_TiffyFit's Review: Haven't we all wished that we were somewhere else, a whole other world when we were young? How nice and wonderful it would be if there were other worlds like ours but better? Although Ally hadn't wished for it, that is exactly what has happened to her. But of course there is more to the event than it appears! In that other world is where Ally discovers herself and more. Much, much more!
Although her desperate goal is to return home to her mom and her friends and to the world with which she is familiar, it doesn't hurt, or it hurts a lot less, to have great looking guys surrounding her and lavishing her with attention she hasn't known in her own world. Surrounded with new friends, including a few elders who took exception to her, Ally quickly adapts and becomes absorbed in the new world's problems at hand, which she learns is also her home world's issues as well. They are aligned or linked: what happens here also happens at home.
Ally discovers that the seriousness and severity of events has connections to her inadvertent fall into the world of Liam and Corm and Isian and Shane and Oisin and Meg...all of whom are very special in their magical way. Ally senses that it is not just the boys, but the place, too.
And, as with all love stories, of course there are issues such as another girl and the huge green monster known as jealousy! It certainly helps to make the story spicy and full of well known human emotions, creating a page turner as the reader (me!) just needs to discover what is next, what is coming, what's the next phase!
Although the boys are given magic, Cindy Saunders has graced the female characters with strong senses of self and confidence and personality that makes up for the lack of the "magical abilities" of the boys. The girls are not prissy types. Intelligent, insightful, efficient in using their feminine mystique. No weaklings here, but still there are a few whinings that bring these characters to life, making them seem real.
Yes there are the familiar villains, how can an excellent story not have an obstacle or two to overcome? As you know by now if you've read my reviews, I don't do spoilers, so you're not getting the specifics from me! My final word on Double Star: Go get this book and enjoy it. Take yourself away to another world and discover magic and love and the tenacity of a young woman who happens to end up in a world far far away and yet so close to our own, who discovers herself, what she is made of, and who discovers love and deep friendships. And she does this all while keeping both world's from ending. Looking forward to reading more in this saga myself!

Where she was going didn’t matter. Where she was, she didn’t know. In this run for her life, her focus was to simply get someplace else. Above, the limbs of the great pines held the stars hostage. She knew the darkness concealed many secrets and, from that fact, there was no escape.Snap. The sound from behind stopped her heart. She dared to turn around. Blog Tour: KEEPER OF REIGN by EMMA RIGHT with book review, excerpt, AND giveaway!
Keeper of ReignBooks written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?
For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.
Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.
A_TiffyFit's Review: The beginning of this book immediately grips your attention ---a king is being admonished by his manservant that he is "almost out of blood." It quickly becomes apparent that the king is penning books, using his own blood as ink and that something devastating is coming.
This prologue got me so excited for this book, all these questions start to whirl in your head and you just cannot wait to turn the page. From there, we jump to our main character, Jules Blaze and his family.
The Blazes are Elfies, half-fairies half-Elves, who, like all Elfies, were cursed generations ago by one misdeed and are now shrunken to barely an inch tall. Falling acorns would be devastating to them, instantly killing them as well as other concerns in such a large world: bugs, birds, gophers, etc. The Blazes are a Keeper family, a secret they guard closely as it could bring them harm if it were common knowledge. Keepers protect an Ancient book, each family of keepers has one.
The story was fast-paced and heavily impresses the importance of loyal friendships and family. I thought Jules was wonderfully naive, brave, and trusting. His sisters are younger than his 16 years, but at times their voices sound so much older so I kept losing track of how old they are supposed to be! This is a cute story that I think will appeal to younger children as well as middle grade children. This is book one in the series. I hope to have more answers as the series progresses as I feel a little lost to the backstory, the history of the Keepers, etc. This was an adventure that rollicked along with lots of movement and action and a focus on friendships.

JULES SLID
UNCONTROLLABLY, deeper and deeper down
the tunnel, gripping Tippy in one arm. He hoped the others were close behind
him but he wasn’t sure. It was dark and he was falling too fast. Screams from
Bitha and Tst Tst echoed around him. Were they okay? Mustn’t let go of the
lantern, he reminded himself.
The bottom eventually
came. Ralston smashed into Jules’s back, somersaulted and landed with a thump
into the side of the burrow, followed by Bitha and Tst Tst. Puffs of dust
clouded the air and everyone choked and spluttered. Between hackings Jules
said, “Stay put. Let the dust settle. Here, drink water.” He passed Ralston a
water pouch.
“I still can’t see.”
“Stop fidgeting and just
blink,” Jules said.
The burrow they stood in
was large and, even though the air seemed cool, Jules didn’t think they could
stay down there indefinitely. Especially if gophers lived nearby.
