This is one of those books where you cannot help but to like the main character. Always a good start! She is very likable and very much true to teenage years, in my opinion.

I liked the idea of being dead but not dead and had my fingers crossed for the outcome I wished for, and enjoyed the story as it rolled along, although I was a tad confused in the beginning.  The transitions threw me, here and there. I was actually amazed that the author is a man as I put this post together because I didn't read the author bio or end of book stuff, etc. BC Johnson did a great job of crafting a teenage girl!

A nice, solid YA read that I'd be happy to recommend to those who fit the age group!

The above quote is from Joules, Rachel's BFF in the book. He describes what you're about to experience as you journey with Rachel on her quest to find her missing sister. This book will run you through emotion after emotion. Sorrow, fear, disgust, horror, sympathy, empathy, heartbreak, and bitter relief. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I agreed to review this book and it was quite the amazing surprise. Bit by bit, piece by piece, more and more is revealed, and more and more is appalling, and you will be holding your breath in anticipation, and fear, as to what could be revealed next.

Rachel is one hell of a character. Brave, strong, determined, loyal, intelligent, gutsy...you can't help but admire her and and be envious of Olivia and the devotion and love her sister holds for her. Even if you're totally loved and adored by your family, Rachel's love is POWERFUL. And you will gasp and grip your kindle tightly as Florentin weaves this story around and around.

An excellent read. I don't know if I could read it again as some descriptions were truly horrifying, but I'm glad I read it this time around. Definitely thrilling, definitely consuming, definitely a breath stealer and kindle bruiser.

“Yeah, lucky me.” Ambrose coughed into his bed sheets. “Maybe they’ll give me a prize, like some bacon or something.”

“What… what does it feel like?”

About The Author:

Emma Adams spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults.

She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in January 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, featuring disappearing uncles, invisibility potions and chimeras.

Curiosity Quills Press is fast becoming a favorite publisher of mine. They seem to have that special knack that finds authors like Matthew Cox, who can weave a story that whisks you away, submerging you in the plot and characters, and make your reality melt away for a few precious hours.

Kirsten Wren is a psionic cop from Division Zero in 2148. First off...let's talk about how much I love the fact that the author gave us an exact year. So often, futuristic books are just left as post-apocalyptic without a definite time frame. I like books like this one where you're given a time frame; I think it makes it easier to suppose everything.

I don't quite know what to compare this book to that will encompass what you're getting. It's futuristic, gritty, detective/cop action, thriller. And yet all those adjectives don't quite grasp the story in its entirety. Cox has created characters with bite and personality, with histories that are visceral, quirks that make you smile, and action that keeps you moving while our heroine unravels the mystery of the murderous AIs. There were some hints regarding her partner early on in the book that made me question him. When we finally are shown, my doubts reared up again and it was this wonderful AHA! moment. I love those moments as you read! I certainly hope this isn't the last book set in Division Zero. I would happily read more and look forward to watching characters and relationships develop from case to case.

 I finished this book a couple of weeks ago and wrote my review and...forgot to post it. So I'm posting it now!

This was a delightful read for me as an adult and one I would have enjoyed as a middle schooler! In a world where super heroes and super villains are abundant, Penelope Akk is the daughter of two superheroes and just waiting for the day her super powers show up. She and her friends are eager to get through middle school without dealing with the "meanies" and when her powers show up, she discovers she's a scientist! She is a mad scientist who spaces out while creating her super gadgets and needs to learn to control it. From The Machine she creates that does amazing things to the super power serum she develops for her friend, Penny is on her way to becoming a...supervillain? Eek!

I really loved this book and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who likes a fast-paced, action-packed fantasy filled with super heroes and super villains, who are truly goodhearted and not nearly as evil as you would expect!

Definitely re-readable and one I'd like on my shelves for future possible kids, nieces, nephews, etc. I'd recommend to any parent with young middle schoolers to adults who just want a fun story to escape within!
