RBTL BOOK TOUR! Aphrodite's Secret Review & Giveaway

Title: Aphrodite’s Secret
Author: Samantha Ketteman
Series: The Forgotten (Book 1)
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Self Published
Release Date: Feb 28 2013
Edition/Formats Available In:  E~book  & Print

Synopsis:
Kaira, still reeling from the loss of her younger sister in a tragic boating accident, lives in the dark world of exotic dancing for survival. When one man enters her life, her world is turned upside down and inside out, where reality and fantasy seem to intertwine.
Kaira feels the eyes of a striking man watching her every move on stage. Zane is a scarred man with many secrets, one of which is the knowledge of who and what Kaira really is and the danger she will face.
While Zane fights a subconscious battle about what to tell her and whether he cares enough to get involved, another has noticed her as well. An Ithacan, sent to destroy her for what she is and take her powers to the God that has commanded all Forgotten be exterminated. The God intends to absorb her powers and rule absolutely.
Before Kaira realizes what is coming for her, she finds herself tumbling into a world where a scarred man that she is inexplicably attracted to will become her only hope. A hideous creature, one such as she’s never seen, is hunting her and trying his best to destroy everything and everyone she knows to get what he wants for his Master, and only Zane knows why.

While Kaira thinks it coincidence that Zane shows up at the club the girls like to frequent after work, Zane uses the planned interception to explore the pull that he feels towards Kaira, when he has cared for no one but himself for so many years. After finally meeting, Zane notices that the Ithacan has also followed and as their eyes meet, they both know that the battle for her soul will come; who will win is less important as the insistence Zane feels to tell Kaira who and what she is before she ends up like her sister.

About the Author

Samantha Ketteman has resided in southern Illinois for 7 years, (though still claims to be an Alabama girl), with her husband and three crazy demon children. She started reading novels at a very young age and decided two years ago to write for herself. She is working on The Forgotten series, as well as two others. She is a caffiene addict, insomniac, and general basketcase most of the time. When she's not writing, she's thinking of writing, much to the chagrin of her husband who has to listen to her paranormal ramblings.

Blog Tour Excerpt!
As she sashayed her way to the center of the stage, exaggerating the swing of her
hips with each step, she glanced around the few rows that were in her line of vision. The
spotlight focused on her made it impossible to see further. It looked as if it was a full
house tonight, which was a good omen for her rent fund. She gave a small, slow sexy,
smile, and sauntered over to the giant gleaming pole standing like an old friend in the
center of the stage. As she swung around in a circle, back arched out from the pole to
better display her more prominent assets, she was mentally singing along to the song.
Kaira hated this song, but it seemed to go hand in hand with the costume she was wearing
for the night, and she had a whole routine devoted to this particular outfit and song.
Sadly, this was one of her more popular costumes and characters. She shimmied down
the pole, spreading her legs and bending over before sliding her backside back up the
pole in a move that would have made many women blush; or fall over; or both. She
turned to face the pole, jumped up, and then maneuvered herself so that she was then
sliding down the pole head first, gripping it with her legs. She slid all the way down to
the floor before releasing the pole, rolling over, and crawling her way along to the first
row of eager faces beaming up at her.

GUEST POST
*We got a glimpse of Zane's journal...the night he first sees Kaira*

I saw the most beautiful creature tonight. She commanded my attention, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her on the stage. I know that she will draw attention to herself, but she doesn’t know what she is, and it could get her killed. As entranced as I am, I don’t know if I want to be involved, yet I feel a pull to her, a sense of duty and a primal sense to protect her. I don’t want to care. I have lived my many years without the need to involve myself in anyone’s life. I failed once before, and it cost me my family. I know that I will repulse her, as I do with every child that points and hides behind his mother. It is inevitable that she will be hunted, as her aura calls out to all those that seek her. Do I get involved? Do I break my promise that I have kept for so long to stay away from others and simply live my life in solitude? I don’t know.

A_TiffyFit's Review
I received this book as part of this blog tour for an honest review. The story was more interesting and attention grabbing than I had thought at first. I thought I would have a hard time getting into a book where the protagonist is a stripper at a small town strip club, even though she’s apparently the daughter of Aphrodite. Never underestimate the powerful lure of greek mythology for me, a_tiffyfit! The story was actually quite interesting and attention-holding. You learn what a tough life Kaira has had – from orphaned to deciding to be a stripper to make good money (not exactly the best of jobs) to being stalked and raped and now here she is being stalked again! I liked her immediate draw to Zane and how she is able to see beyond the scar instead of being scared or repulsed like all the other women he’s encountered. (Really…humans suck. As a general rule, we are SO freaking shallow it’s disgusting!) I loved the pace of the novel, Kaira’s acceptance and strength as she overrides her initial reaction to reject all this information. My only beef with it is that poor editing kept kicking me out of Reader Zone (RZ). RZ is sacred and I do not like being kicked out of it. Not only were there homonym errors (your vs you’re, there/their/they’re), but at one point in the novel, Matilda is talking to Aphrodite and saying that He is her “something for soul mate”. Obviously this must’ve been an author note to find a new word for soul mate/other half so that she is not reusing this phrase too often, but then it was three pages of this “something” as opposed to a real term. As a reader, it made me recoil from the page making the pinched-sucked-on-a-lemon-Renee-Zellwegger face. But I was enjoying the romance and action of the plot so I smoothed it over and continued on! This is book one of the series, and from this novel, I get the hint that Jasmine may be the lead in the next novel. I liked Jasmine – staunch friend, fierce supporter, and she tells it like it is!

I liked the romance: sweet, simple, and that paranormal bond is awesome. I will look forward to reading more, hopefully. I’d like to see glimpses of Zane reconnecting with his family, Kaira getting to know all of her powers and her mother, and see who else is a Forgotten daughter. Are there forgotten sons?!

A Matter of Fate
Ellie Heller
Genre: Paranormal Romance/ Contemporary Fantasy Romance
Publisher: Crimson Romance

Book Description:
Someone is setting death-spells targeting mortals and elf blood alike. With her mentor out of commission, it’s up to half-trained Warder Mona Lisa Kubrek to stop the magic. Despite being told repeatedly her job is to nullify spells and not go after the source, too many people are at risk for her to not track the spell-caster down. Even meeting a sexy half-elf shifter won’t distract her from her goal.

Except Cart Dupree is fully trained and has the team to search for the evildoer, so she’d be stupid to not use his expertise. Stupid is something she can’t afford to be, not with her enemy’s henchmen after her. Later she’ll deal with Cart and his questions about her special abilities and the non-standard training her mentor has given her. Right now, they need to unravel where the magician is, and who he is, before he builds enough power to decimate them all.

First, though, they need to stay alive.

TIFFANY'S REVIEW:
I really enjoyed Adrian and Addison's story, but I think what makes this book work even better is the overlying story of Ares & Aphrodite and the petty viciousness of the Greek gods along with Ares & Ditee's love story.

A sweet, fast paced read, I giggled as Adrian put his foot squarely in his mouth when it came to meeting Addison. I enjoyed the snippets of Ares & Ditee's courtship, etc. I would've liked to see more of the banter as the conversations were fun and light. Lovely romance; I liked how in the end, both were willing to move to the other. Love is about support like that.

EXCERPT

“Now you listen here, Adrian Colter. I agreed to let you take Tom out hunting last weekend. If you can’t do this little favor for me… so help me…”

Adrian snorted a laugh. He heard her hitting Tom and telling him to stop laughing. There was a short period of golden silence, but Adrian knew better. Missy’s brain was switching gears for another angle of attack.

“You won’t have to talk flowers and dresses with Addi. Lord knows, I can’t even remember the last time she wore a dress. She lives on a ranch in Montana. Surely you can come up with something to say to a cattle rancher’s granddaughter.”

Adrian ran his hands through his hair. He grabbed his brown leather coat from the edge of his bed. “Fine.” He took a few lumbering steps to the door, and then he opened it to Missy’s smiling face. Tom was standing a few feet back – grinning. “If I didn’t know better, I might think you two planned this little scene.”

He caught a downward glance from Missy and another from Tom. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I have no desire to be set up with anyone, especially a wedding hookup. How lame do you think I am?” Adrian shook his head and stomped past Missy into the living room. “This is really low, you guys. I am not desperate.”

“Adrian,” Missy started, “we know you’re not desperate, but Addi…”

Realization struck. The setup wasn’t for him; it was for her friend. Adrian whirled around to face Missy again. “Dammit, Missy. There’s a reason some women can’t get a man. Usually it’s because something is wrong with them.”

He regretted the words as soon as they’d left his mouth. Missy’s eyes watered, and even Tom’s gaze held utter loathing. His own self-disgust made him grimace.

“You are an asshole, Adrian Colter.” Her voice was sharp, anger clipping every word. “Daddy will pick her up. You can just sit here and drink your beer. Alone.” She grabbed her yellow handbag from the couch and her coat from the hook at the front door. “Tom?”

Adrian frowned as Tom hurried to her side and helped her into her long pink wool coat.

“You need to chill out, Adrian,” Tom shouted before slamming the door closed.

Damn it all to hell! Adrian kicked off his boots and sank into his huge recliner. He’d made a mess of this one. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Interview with the Author!

Let’s start with your writing routine. Do you have a particular place you like to settle in to write?
I usually start with a snack and music, sometimes I spend a few minutes daydreaming about my characters and what I have planned for them… then I dive into my manuscript! My favorite place to write is on my sofa, tucked into the corner with my laptop, and I’m big on having a steady supply of tea and cookies within reach. I tend to snack a LOT while writing, but it balances out because I end up forgetting to eat during revisions.

In the novel, the three main characters seem very different. How would you describe them? Was writing in three points of view a challenge?
I enjoyed the challenge of viewing the world through each of my character’s eyes. Julia is sarcastic, outspoken, protective, and impulsive. Angie is steady, polite, thoughtful, and reserved. Kaitlyn is contemptuous, cynical, guarded, and fearless. They each have flaws and strengths that play into their relationship. I wanted to see if three girls who were so dissimilar could overcome their differences and, if so, would their experiences change them? What would their motivations be? Would they cooperate for the good of the world? For their own agendas? For personal gain? What about loyalty to one another? It was fascinating to me to think about how the girls would react to an existence that forced them to unite, and I loved seeing each of them grow.

Do any of the characters personalities resemble your own, or people you know?
Even though I created the main characters as their own people, I can’t help but infuse pieces of myself, and the experiences I’ve had, in every character I write. Because of this, I would say that I can relate to each of them.

Timespell delves into the time period of the French Revolution. What drew you to this historical period? What made you choose certain locations in the book?
I loved the idea of Marie Antoinette being the same age as my main characters when she made her Parisian debut. I think that’s probably what first had me poking into researching this particular era. The more I read, the more fascinated I became, and before I knew it, I had several scenes in mind for the story based around key events surrounding Marie Antoinette’s life. I liked choosing locations that made sense in the story and the timeline, so I decided to use Tuileries Palace as an anchor throughout a lot of the time travel that occurred in Timespell. Between Marie Antoinette’s Parisian debut and the terrifying march on the palace many years later, it was a great place to have the girls battle demons and experience key events of the Marie Antoinette era.

In TIMESPELL, the brash and impulsive Julia must team up with her sweet and straight-laced best friend, Angie, and the malicious and power-hungry Kaitlyn in order to keep the witch-like powers of her inheritance. But these powers come at a cost. The girls are bound to serve the Fates, and their first mission sends them back in time to Marie Antoinette’s Paris and eventually, into the chaos and war of the French Revolution.

Nettles stung Lia’s flesh. She pressed her fingers against her mouth for relief. This is what I get for letting my thoughts wander. Grandma wouldn’t have been so careless while harvesting sting-leaf. She wouldn’t have let the villagers’ opinions prick at her mind, no matter how many called her mad for crafting remedies in the old ways.

Koun whined and nudged Lia’s arm with his nose.

“I’m all right, boy.” Lia gazed into her hound’s violet eyes and then turned her attention to the friendlier mallow plant. Its white flowers matched Koun’s coat and its leaves and roots promised a soothing balm for the nettle’s bite. She’d make another batch of salve for Da, too. He swore her “potions” kept his hands fit enough for hewing wood and soft enough for holding Ma. Her ma could use a bit more mallow infusion for her soaps, as well, and she’d take a bundle of clippings to Granda—

Her thoughts scattered as Koun shot from the garden. Lia whirled around to the pair of horses charging up the path. She squinted in the dusky light and recognized Da’s friend, Kenneth, on one of the horses. Then her insides went cold. Across the other horse’s back lay Da’s limp body.

She dropped the harvested mallow and sped from her garden toward them. Ma’s scream shot like a bolt through her, but Kenneth’s words, “He’s alive,” offered Lia a morsel of hope.

Kenneth carried Da into the cottage, and Lia caught a glimpse of her father’s torn and bloodied clothing. “I’ll fetch Granda,” she cried, and hurried to her filly.

Clad in her usual boy’s breeches and high leather boots, Lia raced her horse down the path with her heart pounding in rhythm to the hoof beats.

FMB Book Blitz & Giveaway! Heels & Heroes by Tiffany Allee

Publisher: Decadent
Format: Ebook
Length: 27,000 words | 79 Pages

Book Description:

Brenda is a second-rate superhero, normally more concerned with uniform fashion than defeating bad guys. But when a violent, new super villain declares war against her city, she suddenly finds her specialized power to deafen sound in high demand.

As if facing the destructive force of a new enemy isn’t bad enough, she finds herself paired with the powerful, yet emotionally distant, Justice. Forced to work at the side of the only man who gets her heart pounding, Brenda is not only in danger of losing her life in battle, but also her heart to a man who might not be able to love her back.

Excerpt:

“You think only some superheroes are real?” he asked, shock rushing through
him.

“Justice,” she said, after glancing around to make sure they were alone.

“There is a difference between real superheroes like you who have the power to save people from villains on a regular basis and people like me. My powers, such as they are, don’t make me any different from Maria and other normal people. Yours do.”

“You think it’s the powers that separate us?” Before he realized what he was doing, he was up from his chair and standing only inches from her. Her face was turned away, and she had to look at him so he could make her understand. He touched her soft skin with his fingertips, tipping her chin up. A scowl cut across her full mouth at his touch, but she didn’t move away.

“Isn’t it?” Her voice was soft, caressing.

It took a moment for him to remember what they were talking about.

“It’s not our powers that separate us—make us heroes. Yes, us,” he added as she started to shake her head. “It’s the willingness to put on the uniform. To face things that might be stronger than ourselves in order to save other people.
And the lack of power you’re talking about?” Her skin brushed against his as he leaned in to whisper. “That lack of power is what makes you a real superhero, Brenda, because you’re willing to fight in spite of that fact.”
She turned her head, mouth parted to argue with him, to deny what he could so clearly see. Bringing his face down inches from hers, he grazed her jawline with his knuckles. She swayed toward him, gaze fixed on his mouth. She licked her lips, and the last bit of control he’d clung to broke.

Her lips were soft—so soft—and after a moment’s hesitation she kissed him back with a zeal he hadn’t expected. The sweet smell of strawberries filled his nose, and it occurred to him on some level that the intoxicating scent was probably her shampoo. He reached for her, touching her back with his hand,
needing to get closer, to feel her body on his. She pressed against him eagerly, and her mouth opened. Soft and wet, her tongue caressed his.

Suddenly he couldn’t think about anything but her. The way she’d filled out her tight, little uniform. And the sexy confidence she donned with her conservative blouse and slacks. He hardened painfully in his uniform, and she moaned. The small sound made every muscle in his body tighten. He didn’t care that they werepractically in public. He had to have her. Now.

Publisher: Indiana Ink Publishing
Release Date: Mar 1 2013

Synopsis:

Mia Blake wasn’t the first girl that was taken by the vampires.

She had heard all about the girls who were missing, and even though they were only “missing”, she knew in her heart that those girls were dead.

She felt sad for them, sure. But more than that, she felt glad that they had been strangers – not someone she knew, and certainly not her. Things like that didn’t happen to girls like her.

They always happened to someone else, and that’s why she barely blinked as she made her way across an empty football field, through a deserted parking lot, to meet a fate she had arrogantly assumed was reserved for other people.

She was a stupid girl.

She paid for it.

Excerpts

THREE Excerpts from Ever Winter:

Excerpt #1
Shade’s ears rang from the darkling’s screech and she had the sudden urge to let go of Camulus and Brisa to cover them to make the shearing noise go away. She resisted, afraid she’d end up in some weird teleporting limbo if she dared disconnect from Camulus now. She endured the pain and felt Brisa trying to tug away from her too, probably also in torturous pain. The jaunt could not have ended sooner and she found the entire bunch writhing on the floor from the darkling’s searing call.

Shade followed suit, collapsing to the ground and grabbing at her ears. Moments passed before the relentless ring faded away, leaving them all breathing hard and sweating buckets. Shade pulled her arm away from her ear to grasp her other arm, which now was throbbing with a searing pain. Slowly opening her eyes as she breathed deeply in and out, she saw why her arm was hurting so much. A black spot where the darkling had touched her right before they had teleported away stood stark against the pale skin of her forearm. It sent spikes of pain radiating up her through her elbow, up her shoulder and into her chest. She gasped, gritting her teeth from the agony.

The others were now finally getting to their feet, some still dazed from the deafening screech. Dylan held his hands on his knees, crouched down as he shook it off his senses. Noticing that Shade was still on the ground, he hurried toward her and knelt down. She was grabbing her left arm and shaking uncontrollable, tears leaked from both her eyes and her face was screwed up in pain.

“Shade?” He pulled her up to sit against him but she could barely open her eyes to register him.

“It’s burning!” She gasped, clutching her arm against her chest, cradling it softy.

“What happened?”

“The darkling, it touched me before…before we left.” Shade tried to breathe the pain away, but it was winning and she wasn’t sure how long she would stay conscious. “What is this?”

“A darkling’s kiss.” Soap slid down to check out the wound. It was hot around the edges and the black spot wasn’t growing. Still, Shade grunted through the torturous agony. “When a darkling marks you, it dies. In death, its touch poisons your blood slowly until all of your blood turns black and you either become a darkling or…” he cleared his throat, looking solemn. “Or, you die. But it takes just a few days.”

Excerpt #2
“We have to take her out of here or she’ll die.” Corb stated, gritting his teeth at the Teleen warrior. “You have to come, though I’d prefer you stay here and rot.” He turned and whisked her away down the hall. Dylan followed close behind, afraid to lose sight of Shade forever.

The atrium was as before, with the enormous Great Oak Tree standing like a king in the middle of the room. Corb brought her to lie next to the great, metallic trunk of the tree and turned toward Dylan.

“You’ll have to be touching her at the same time as you ask the tree for sanctuary. Tell it where to go. Hurry!”

“Why can’t you?” He grabbed Shade’s fallen hand, feeling her shaking from the cold and her lips slowly turning an unsavory shade of blue.

“I’m an Ancient. There is no sanctuary for Ancients of Faerie. The tree is an ancient unto itself. I can ride along with you, but I cannot make the request.” He motioned Dylan, looking more desperate as the moments ticked by.

Dylan frowned, grasping her hand even tighter and watched Corb grab her other hand. He didn’t like it, but he had to get her to a healer quickly. Pressing his fingers to the cool, steely bark of the Great Oak, he squeezed his eyes shut. “Take us to sanctuary, Great Oak Tree. Take us home, swiftly as you may.”

Excerpt #3
“Open the door, Stanis,” Shade hissed. “We’re through here.”

“Just a minute, princess. I have bone to pick with you.” He tapped the wall and moved so fast, only a blur appeared where he had stood. He was in the kitchen now and pulled out a small, blue glass bowl. Bringing it to her, he held it out toward Shade, pushing her to take it. When she did, he resumed his position on the creaky chair, motioning her to sit back on the couch. “Please, sit.”

“I’d rather stand.”

He groaned, rolling his head on his shoulders, his long brown hair spilled over the back of the chair as he did that. He looked like a drunk slumped in the chair, almost falling off the edge.

“Suite yourself, changeling. But I highly suggest you sit. There are more ways than one to use magic, even bound up as you are.” His wild eyes seemed more sober now and she felt a sudden urge to sit as told. The suspicion she felt that he was using magic on her was eating at her nerves. She hated being played, and he seemed a master at that.

“What do you mean, more ways?” She settled between Soap and Dylan and held the bowl out. It was small enough to fit in her palm.

“This is a Pith. It extracts your essence, therefore, your powers are given a release through this bowl. Even in your case, one’s powers cannot be completely contained, as one can never truly trap a mind. This Pith provides another route, another path for your magic to escape your body and work its powers. We’re only trapped by the binds we allow to be placed upon ourselves. This breaks through that. It will let you use your water magic, as if you’d never been bound.”

The others gasped, staring in wonderment at the ordinary blue glass bowl sitting in her palm. It seemed utterly mundane, no etchings on its hard surface, nothing to condone its powerful use. She wondered if he was pulling her leg or not. But it was worth a try.

“One drop into the bowl, Shade. That’s all it takes.” He gestured quickly, to make her move faster. She gulped, mesmerized by the glass. She silently prayed that it would work, if not, they were doomed. No, she was doomed.
