My Own Mr. Darcy
After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough.
Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.
A_TiffyFit's Review: I absolutely loved reading this book. It is sweet, silly, ridiculous, painful, and uplifting. Elizabeth Barrett's obsession with Matthew Macfadyen's Mr Darcy has ruled her dating life from the age of 16 to 23. She rejects one man after another as none hold a candle to her Mr Darcy. Fed up, Janessa, her best friend, coerces her into accepting 10 dates with the next guy she meets, trying to help her friend move on. Elizabeth reluctantly agrees and then, after a fabulously fun second date with Chad, Mr Darcy in the form of one Matthew Dawson walks into her bank, where she is a teller.
I love Jane Austen. I love her writing, her snark, her romance, her characters, everything! This book was wonderfully amusing as I'm seeing correlations between Karey White's characters and Jane Austen's characters. Elizabeth may believe she wants a Mr Darcy, but getting the modern version of exactly that is no fun. He's a stodgy, stuck-up, schmucky stick-in-the-mud who wouldn't know a good time if it bit him in the arse. Matt Dawson DOES soften a bit, but I had to laugh as our modern Lizzie is SO stuck on that movie that she's enamored of him for doing the schmucky things that Darcy/Dawson does! What?! No!
This was a lovely, clean romance that I could recommend to any Austen fan. It made me giggle and is definitely I can envision talking about over coffee with a bunch of friends. Lovely ending, lovely romance, I really enjoyed this read!
