I am officially a Lizzy Ford minion. She writes such imaginative, wonderful stories that just whisk you away for a couple hours of adventure through reading. I've called her previous books kindle-bruisers and candy reads. Kindle-bruisers because you're hanging onto every word, punching your kindle with one finger to get to the next page; candy reads because they are these delicious nuggets or bonbons that you can't help but want to shove into your mouth until you become diabetic.
I read Charred Heart, the first book, last month, and was so excited to read Charred Tears this month! The final in this trilogy, Charred Hope comes out in January, so the rumor mill has it. Phew! Not a long wait in between books at all! You MUST start with Charred Heart. You need to meet Chace and Skylar and find out why the heck we are where we are and what is going on.
This book picks up where Charred Heart left off -- Chace is without his magic, Skylar is mad at him and still convinced she can trust the people she was brainwashed to work with, there are a host of new (or more participatory) characters in this book. Skylar annoyed me in this book. She has this holier than thou attitude, is overly persecuting of Chace and everyone that isn't her, etc. While she's coming out of her shell, she was a jerk in this book. I know she has a lot to process, new information, etc., but since she's taking the reigns of control, I don't feel like I owe her any slack. Big girl panties, Skylar. Big girl panties. Another little facet of her I found unbelievable/annoying is how she calls Gavin/Mr Nothing "Dad". Dad is something that is affectionate, lifelong, earned. I suppose it rubbed me the wrong way because there is no way in heck I'd be calling him Dad quite so soon, happy or not to be reunited with him.
Gunner the panther was my favorite. He brought such wonderful levity to intense situations while being perfectly serious. His sarcasm isn't heavy and rude, it's just that perfect amount that makes you snicker. Ooooh how I hope for more of him in Charred Hope, coming in January!
