I admit to being a paranormal junkie, so I jumped at the chance to read this short novel when offered an ARC. I'm not usually a short novel person as they rarely leave me satisfied, burning with a bunch of unanswered questions.
This book was not that kind of short novel.
Author Ciara Ballintyne's writing paints a world and characters so vivid that I could picture the streets and alleys, practically smelling the rank, sweet yet foul rotting smell of the body Alloran discovers. The pace is phenomenal not only because it is fast and keeps the plot moving forward but because there is such a wealth of information in so few words! I could've read more and more for hours and hours, but Ballintyne wraps it all up in one suspenseful, tidy package. There's repressed emotions, a man on the run, magic, demons, a frenemy who has become sinister and malicious, and a sweet budding romance. I was rather amazed at the intricacies of the plot and background information given in such a short novel. There's room for so much more without making you feel as if you're missing a thing; you just want to unfurl THAT CORNER OVER THERE that was mentioned and explore there.
So, did Alloran save himself? Did he save the day? Did his former best friend triumph? ;) You gotta read to find out!
