Feature Follow! from Parajunkee & Alison Can Read

Edit: My apologies! Somehow CATPCHA turned itself back on. I hate that thing. I've turned it back off! Sorry for the p.i.t.a. to comment bit! ~Tiffany

This is a Feature & Follow Friday, hosted by parajunkee & Alison Can Read. Basically, you hop on the list, follow them, follow the featured blogger, and follow everyone else that signs up. I'm excited to discover more of you to read!

The topic this week is --

Q: Confess your blogger sins! Is there anything as a newbie blogger that you've done, that as you've gained more experience you were like -- oops?

I am a new book review blogger, so I am probably committing book reviewer sins left and right as I find my comfort zone. I've joined up with a few Book Blast tours and that's making me feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it, even as my site is still pretty ... haphazard to look at. My biggest mistake is that I do not yet have a review policy. I am a member of netgalley and sign up for ARCs when I can!

I'm looking forward to getting to meet all of you!

Synopsis
Some things are worth waiting for…
Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.
Some things are worth experiencing…
Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.
Some things should never be kept quiet…
But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?
And some things are worth fighting for…
WAIT FOR YOU is available now!

Liesel Schwarz's A Conspiracy of Alchemists

A Conspiracy of Alchemists (The Chronicle of Light and Shadow, #1)A Conspiracy of Alchemists by Liesel Schwarz
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Disclaimer: Received from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This was a fun, well-paced steampunk fantasy romance! I thought it was a strong start to a new series that I will be snatching as soon as available. It starts off with intrigue and action and keeps it up throughout the book. I loved the absinthe fairies and the inner monologue of Adele as she travels with Elle on her adventure.

I've always liked Wonder Woman and the archetype of strong, self-efficient feminine leads without them acting as if they have something to prove. Elle Chance is this kind of character. She is self-sufficent and able to stand on her own, but doesn't have that self-aggrandizement that can be so annoying. She questions Marsh and his motives from the beginning, which was smart in my book as why ever would you trust someone with your life and the life of a loved one based on his word alone?

Marsh, as her counterpart, is likeable with the tiniest hint of "hurt in the past" that makes you want Elle to fix him. Dashing, gentlemanly, and never condescending.

I enjoyed the turns of mythology in regards to oracles, the fantasy of magic with warlocks, and the steampunk ships, creations, mechanicals, and alchemists. The ending was satisfying even though it left you with heart palpitations and wanting the next book RIGHT NOW.

A Conspiracy of Alchemists publishes on March 4, 2013. So get it now and join me in the "wait, when is the SEQUEL?!"

Kaylen's Rising - a strong debut novel!

Kaylen's Rising (Tomes of Taria, Book 1)Kaylen's Rising by Yves Robichaud
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Disclosure: Received an e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.

Kaylen's Uprising is a wonderful first novel geared towards the younger reader. Kaylen is a cave elf, living in the town of Caverna. He has never been outside of Caverna and has lived a very secluded life thanks to extreme pacifist parents who own a lovely flower shop. As Kaylen is finally granted his wish to be "normal" and go to school, albeit with a ton of restrictions from his parents, he learns that humans are at war with the elves. And that there are dwarves, trolls, ogres, and witches who are also targeted by the humans.

You learn of Kaylen's special powers, things he didn't know at all about himself. He is an instant outcast, but a patient and understanding one, able to put himself in other people's shoes.

The descriptions of various creatures and magics immediately put me in the mind of video games, much like the World of Warcraft or some such. From fire spells and lightning shields, giant scorpions and spiders, summoning of skeletons, etc. You have healers and knights and mages/wizards and archers. It is quite the vivid world.

There are a few things that fell short for me. The dialogues seemed choppy, but something I could imagine would be easy to read to or along with a younger child. In the breadth of a sentence you have a couple characters who go from extremely angry and volatile to calm and reasonable. I would've liked more on Mirdan the jeweler and his past, a few more moments with Kaylen's parents to explain his father's rage and his mother's simpering, maybe more in the schooling section so that the characters can develop a stronger relationship with one another instead of leaping into the adventures. The adventures were good and had a great amount of tension that you would expect when given such quests. I thought the author handled that very nicely.

I'd read more of Kaylen and his adventures and see how his friends progress and if peace will be upheld between Caverna and Taria's humans! I really liked that Kaylen immediately found a friend in Turin and their camaraderie! I look forward to seeing how their friendship strengthens as they both develop more and more skills, fighting for Caverna!

This novel would be perfect to read to your youngster or read along with them; an adventurous, fun tale with likeable characters

Excerpts
Excerpt 1
“You are a vampire.”
“A what?” I shrieked.
“You are a vampire, Alyssa,” he said slowly. “An immortal.”
“No! That’s not possible.” I shook my head in disbelief. “Vampires aren’t real. They’re fiction; nothing but stories and myths.”
One of his dark eyebrows rose slightly. He cocked his head to the side. He smirked as his eyes trailed down from my face. “Did you not notice the mark on your neck? Do you not remember drinking my blood?” His fangs showed as he spoke: pure white, sharp little daggers, just a slight bit longer than the rest of his teeth. His voice carried that same arrogance I remembered from when he talked with my attackers.
My mouth hung open. No, this isn’t possible.
Things were still fuzzy in my head, but I did remember the blood, the liquid fire, I had been forced to drink. I’d hoped it had just been some drug-induced dream.
Oh, my God, it was true. I drank his blood. “I’m…a … vampire?”
“Yes.” He smiled. “Our kind are very real. And now, Alyssa, you are one of us.”
I slumped backwards into the cushions of the couch. His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I stared wide-eyed at the distant wall. This was like some terrible nightmare. I didn’t want to believe what he was telling me, but I knew he was right. There was no other way to explain what had happened to me. No amount of hallucinogenic drugs could have explained how I had survived the attack, why I had these markings, or the sharpness of my own new set of fangs.
“Does that mean I’m… undead?”
“You are immortal,” Lysander said with a casual wave of his hand. “Undead is a silly term mortals use to explain the supernatural things they cannot possibly understand. You are no more dead than you were when you woke up this morning. You are just, for lack of a better word, changed.”
Lysander gave me another toothy grin. His fangs were frightening to look at. The memory of him biting me played over and over in my mind like a video stuck on repeat.
“But you drank my blood.” My hand shot back up to cover the wound on my neck.
“Only enough to allow the transformation.”
He reached out, grabbed my hand, and pulled it from my neck.
“Don’t touch me.” I flinched, annoyed and afraid at his sudden gesture. I tried to pull my hand out of his grip, but he was so much stronger than I was. He pushed my hand to my chest, forcing me to feel the erratic thumping of my heart.
“You see,” he said calmly. “Your heart still beats.”
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “But…how?” I relaxed my hand relaxed under his grip.
“Unlike some of your other organs, your heart is still necessary to keep blood flowing through your body.” Lysander let go of me. “For now, while your body is in transition, it will beat in an accelerated rhythm, but it will eventually slow itself to a more normal pace.”
I was speechless. My mind raced, recalling books and movies, everything I knew about vampire mythology. Bats, stakes, and garlic immediately popped into my mind.
“I must mention that your generation’s ideas of vampires are a bit off.” Lysander spoke with a hint of amusement in his voice. “Many of the popular books and movies about our kind are no more real than children’s fairytales.”
Is he reading my mind? I wondered how he seemed to say just the right thing as I was thinking it. “So, none of the stories are true?”
“Most of the new stories you are probably familiar with are filled with complete nonsense.”
“What about the old ones, like Dracula?”
Lysander sighed. His shoulders slumped. “Dracula is not what I would consider an old story, but yes, a few are based on some truth, however little it may be. There is much that is added to make us seem easier to deal with.” His lip curled into a crooked grin. “Mortals like to think they can hurt us. It helps them sleep at night.”
“So, you’re not afraid of crosses, then?”
Lysander shook his head. “Crosses and other holy relics are nothing more than symbols and decorations. I hardly see why an ornamental cross would stop me from doing anything. Furthermore, I think it’s time for the Christians to come up with a better symbol. One that is a little less… gloomy.”
I chuckled. “Okay, what about garlic?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “What about it?”
“Isn’t garlic bad for vampires?”
“No.” He shook his head. “Why would it be? We don’t eat, so how would it harm us?”
I nodded. “Okay… umm… stakes?”
His head tilted to the side as the corner of his lip rose up into a teasing grin. “You can try to stab me with a piece of wood, but I doubt it will do much more than aggravate me. We heal quite fast. Perhaps a blade would work better.”
I shuddered, seeing his teeth again as he spoke. Is that how I look now?
“So, knives and swords are bad?”
“Yes. It is much harder to regenerate a severed limb. And if we are separated from our heads, it would be safe to say we would cease to exist.”
I smiled, noting the sarcasm in Lysander’s voice. I could tell he’d had this conversation before. He seemed to be enjoying my round of silly questions.
“Holy water?” I blurted out.
Lysander let out a hearty laugh. “No, you won’t melt into a pile of goo. You can throw most of that nonsense out of the window, Alyssa.”
I giggled, realizing how silly it sounded: melting into a pile of goo after being splashed with water. Maybe this won’t be so bad.
“You see, we immortals are not as ridiculous as Hollywood likes to portray us. Though one thing is true... we do survive off the blood of the living.”

Excerpt 2
“You must create a very strong feeling in yourself. You have to feel it if you are going to make your victim feel it,” Lysander continued.
That doesn’t sound too hard.
“When you have your strong feeling, you must will that feeling to your victim, so they feel it too.”
A wicked grin crossed his face. I knew he was about to do something to me, but I didn’t know what it was.
“Now, imagine your victim feeling this as you attack.”
He lifted his hand and brushed the side of my neck. His touch caused my skin to pimple with gooseflesh. He looked down into my eyes; I felt the power of his stare intensify. A gray haze filled my head, and I suddenly felt weightless in my seat.
My heart fluttered wildly, like a humming bird buzzing in my chest. A feeling of want took me, an overwhelming need for him to be close to me. I swooned, falling back into the chair. I caught my balance just as Lysander bent down eye level with me.
His hand knotted in my hair. He gently pulled my head backwards. Hot breath grazed the sensitive skin on my neck as he drew closer; it set my blood on fire. I suddenly needed to touch him, to feel his body against my own. I closed my eyes, exhaled slowly, and arched my neck towards him in anticipation. I knew now what was coming. I didn’t want to struggle. I wanted him to bite me, to take my blood, my essence, into him.
His lips parted on my skin, sending a shiver down my spine.
A sigh escaped my lips as his teeth pierced my skin—a momentary pinch. I whimpered but didn’t struggle against him. The sensual pull as he drew the life out of me quickly replaced the pain.
I wanted this. I wanted to be taken—to give all of myself to Lysander. Whatever he wanted from me, he could have. I would die in his arms if he only asked.
As quickly as he advanced, he finished his lesson, gently releasing me, letting me sink into the chair. Part of me wanted to cry out. I wanted more of his kiss. My body ached for his closeness.
Lysander pulled away and sat himself down on the floor. His eyes caught mine as I slowly regained control over my body. We sat gazing at each other. I wondered if he had shown me some of the real feelings simmering underneath his usually emotionless exterior.
It took a few minutes for me to completely recover from Lysander’s advance. I sat back up on the chair, breathing slowly, trying to calm my pounding heart.
“Now, Alyssa, I want you to try that on me. Make me feel that same way, make me want to die in your arms.”
I don’t know that I can do that.
His gaze had been so powerful and commanding. He had taken control of me before I knew what was happening. I didn’t know if I would be able to match that intensity and control.
I breathed slowly and steadily, trying to center myself. I needed to quiet my own yearning before I could gauge the emotions from Lysander. The lingering effects of his advance on me still took center stage in my mind. I couldn’t deny the ache, the desire to touch him.
I wanted him. I wanted to share myself with him. I wanted to be close to him.
I slid off the chair and onto his lap, on the floor. Our eyes met, and I again felt the warmth, the connection between us. I focused on his beautiful eyes, calling up any power I might have in myself.
I want you, I want all of you.
Willing Lysander to feel my need, I leaned in, pressing my lips to his. He didn’t reject me.
I want you, Lysander.
His lips parted and our tongues collided, dancing together, playfully licking against sharp teeth as we explored one another’s mouths. We locked in an embrace as new lovers on his dining room floor. I savored the feeling of his lips—so soft, like two silken pillows—pressing against my own.
I willed my feelings on him, hoping they were strong enough for him to want me as I wanted him.
Kissing wasn’t enough; I needed a taste. Thirst nagged at me, and I needed blood to satiate it. I broke from the kiss and ran my hands through his silky hair, gently pushing his head sideways, exposing his bare neck as I searched for the pulsing blue vein.
He shuddered as my teeth broke through the soft flesh of his neck. His blood; the tingling ecstasy, the warm, sweet, honey liquid flooded my mouth, and a dizzying rush of energy washed through me.
Instinctively, as if I had been doing it my whole life, I willed Lysander to share in this feeling.
A low, rumbling groan of pleasure came from him.
I drew his blood into me, slowly feeling my need for him increase. I wanted to have him, all of him. I willed that thought and feeling to Lysander and drank him in deeply.
His arms surrounded me, tightening in an embrace, pulling me in close, silently telling me to take him. A hard knot formed in his pants. I felt it pressing against me as I sat in his lap.
Warmth spread between my legs. I reveled in the feel as he embraced me against him.
His heart beat in a slow, powerful rhythm, like a drum urging me to move and dance.
I ground into his hardness, matching the beat of his calling heart. Lysander’s chest vibrated against me as he let out another rumbling groan of pleasure. His hands raked down my back. Pulling me in close, he forced my body to press harder and harder against him. His hands sank lower down my back. He squeezed and kneaded my ass as he guided the motion of my hips.
My head swam with pleasure as I drank in my fill. My body flooded with energy. I ached with need for more. Erotic images played in my mind. I had not had the pleasure of a man in so long. I needed to feel him inside of me. I imagined him on top of me, taking me. I willed him to see that image and feel that desire.
Oh, God. I need you Lysander.
I released his neck. Lysander’s hand reached up, cradling the back of my head as his lips found mine. In one fluid motion he rolled us over, laying me gently on the ground below him.
It was as if he had heard my thoughts. I flushed with excitement, looking up into his eyes.
Flames of passion burned brightly in the swirling twilight.
Lysander blinked a few times. His lusty gaze suddenly returned to a flat, emotionless expression as if someone had flicked on a light switch.
I silently cried out, What happened?

Pursuing the Times

Pursuing the TimesPursuing the Times by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Disclaimer: I was given this book by the author in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. No monetary compensation for this review at all.

Very very rarely do you come across a book that has you grinning only a few pages in and laughing out loud a few chapters later. Mercury Lauren, the Chick Lit writer desperate for a review from the New York Times Book Review, is a chaotic, spazztic, witty, bright woman who definitely knows how to go after what she wants. She describes herself as once being a "mousy book clerk" but I fail to see how this is possible because this woman has got PERSONALITY.

The whole premise of the book is about Mercury's passion for a NYT Book Review blurb, how she doesn't write "Chick Lit" but stories about "the human condition" and as she runs into one person after another, we truly see that human condition.

The glimpses into the world of a burgeoning author (well, I guess I should say well established as she is into her fifth book) and her relationship with her agent, book tours, ARCs, and insecurities was fantastic. There were frustrating moments of her believing the slimeball, but I think it was even more frustrating for me because I am so often the victim of being too trusting myself.

Mercury's neuroses were just non-stop. It did get to be a little much at times because you just know she can be an energy drainer! I liked the golf scene where a certain someone admires her chutzpah, and I liked the vulnerability she shows at the book signing.

This was a fun, witty, laugh out loud read with a nice bit of romance, including a modern little White Knight to the Rescue bit. The bantering of emails had me snickering, her inner dialogue that quickly turns into a panicked phone call to her agent had me shaking my head, and her antics had me laughing out loud.

Thank you SO much, Lauren Baratz-Logsted!

Blood's Pride by Evie Manieri

Blood's PrideBlood's Pride by Evie Manieri
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Disclaimer: Received this from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Rating: 2.5 stars. It was better than okay, but I don't have a strong enough sense of "like" to fully commit to the 3 stars "I liked it!" rating.

A little quote to start this off, from one of my favorite movies, The Princess Bride:
Grandfather: "Does it have action? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, True Love, miracles!"
Grandson:"Doesn't sound too bad; I'll try and stay awake."

In this case, both the grandfather and the grandson would be correct. This book dragged for me.

The cover is enticing. You see "the Mongrel", King Jachad of the Nomas, and one of the flying mounts of the Norlanders, a triffon soaring above them. It really sets you up for a good, epic fantasy tale. So why the lukewarm rating?

It's hard to pinpoint it. Obviously reviews are very subjective; things that work for others may not work for me and vice versa.

There is SO much going on in this book. You have the Norlanders aka the Dead Ones, the Shadari, the Nomas, key players, little jerkwads, pissing contests among the soldiers, etc. and a whole bunch of history that just...didn't come together very well for me. That's not to say that there isn't a story line there, it's just that with the POV switching every few moments I thought it felt incredibly disjointed. You have these relationships that could be explored a bit more, but instead you get snatches of feelings or conversations here and there.

There isn't a big aha! reveal moment or anything that feels quite conclusive. However, that is not to say that the book didn't end. It did and with room for a sequel or two. And I did find the personalities of the characters well-developed. I had instant loathing from single conversations, an intense dislike for another, mediocre "meh" emotions towards one of the Norlanders, and a moment or two of absolute rage where I wanted to strangle or slap a character.

The tale continues in the next book, "Fortune's Blight" - and that alone should tell you who the next tale is about. However, I thought this first book fell short of its title and the character it should have focused around. She was the target as the antagonist, but you only ever see her in snippets, and all of those snippets are wrathful, sneering, or jaded and all lack explanation.

Despite my lukewarm reaction, I have a feeling that this will get 5 star reviews from people who adore everything that tries to be epic fantasy. There is action and heartbreak (I disliked that kid, Dramash, but at the same time pitied him) and sword fights and vengeance.

Thank you very much, TOR, for the read!

Learning to be a Book Blogger

I don't think I will ever be as good as so many of these book bloggers that I read and follow. Their sites are full of giveaways and reviews and author interviews and advertisements, etc., etc.

Me, I'm a babbler. I like to just write from the top of my head. My book reviews I try to keep spoiler free, including telling you all about the plot. I figured that if you're interested enough in the book, you'll follow the link to read the synopsis and other reviews, so I'm just going to give you my heartfelt impression and reaction. I may need to change that later, but for now, it works.

I like how goodreads.com lets me copy the html of my reviews so I can easily pop them into this blog. I use my same reviews on amazon.com, goodreads.com, and here. I tweet my reviews, I link them to google +, etc. Right now, I don't have the wherewithal to host giveaways, but I hope that as my personal situation becomes better, I can! I love reading all these blogs of book giveaways, ARC giveaways, e-readers, etc. It is so amazing!

Today, I'm presenting the cover of RUSH by Eve Silver, which comes out this JUNE! I am doing this as part of a contest, but also because the premise of the book sounds really good. I'm a gamer and this sounds like a awesome fantasy! Check out the gorgeous cover! I've linked the image to amazon.com so you can pre-order.

Thanks for reading!

ARC Review - The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

The FirebirdThe Firebird by Susanna Kearsley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

*happy sigh* Review to come. I don't want to write it right now as I'm still living in the world of Rob and Nicola, Anna & Edmund.
*******************************************

If you couldn't already tell by the happy sigh above, I LOVED this book. I found myself reading slower and slower once halfway through as I wanted it to continue. I was excited when I realized we were back to Slains Castle for a bit, and easily imagined Eyemouth having done a little traveling in Scotland and seeing a village just like that. My first book by Ms Kearsley was The Winter Sea and I really loved it.

THIS is how romances should be. Much like The Winter Sea, The Firebird has two stories to tell. The modern story of Rob & Nicola, and the history of Anna Moray (and later her love interest, Edmund).

Perhaps I'm attracted to brogues and all things Scottish, but I was instantly enamored of Rob. And it wasn't til his mom was talking about him to Nicola that I said, "omg The Shadowy Horses! I really have to read it now!" I love the ties like that.

I found the psychometry and telepathy interesting and found myself envying Rob & Nicola for their ability to speak to one another mind to mind. You cannot get more intimate than that!

As Anna's story unfolds, I was eager to learn more and more. I was hoping to have her childhood promise to her fulfilled, but couldn't see how it would be accomplished. The twist...boy do I feel stupid. I READ The Winter Sea! I should have seen that coming, especially with the remarks on the plane about how Russians call one another as so-and-so's son/daughter. *facepalm*

I loved this. That makes two books this year I would read over and over and over again, so far.

If you loved The Winter Sea, get this book. Preorder it. If you like romances and historical romances, get this book.

P.S. Receiving the ARC didn't color my review at all: as always, this is a totally honest, unbiased review as you can tell by my blabbering.

Zed: A Cosmic Tale TpZed: A Cosmic Tale Tp by Michel Gagné
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I got a e-copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for a unbiased review.

My first reaction, and the reason why I requested this book, was, "ZOMGHEISSOCUTEWHATISTHIS?" I pretty much had the same reaction while reading the book from frame to frame. The alien Zed is super cute, even when he's traumatized.

Speaking of him being traumatized, this is SUCH a sad story. Sad and violent, probably two moods that describe the human race. You see mob mentality, how easily we can get swept along in rhetoric even when our inner voices are telling us to back up.

The story was fluid and sad; cute and gory. The appearance of God was unexpected seeing as how it's a cosmic tale.

All in all, it was a enjoyable read and one that really needs to be physical to appreciate the artwork. I will be buying this book!

Maria Snyder's Scent of Magic

Scent of Magic (Healer, #2)Scent of Magic by Maria V. Snyder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received this book through netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I did NOT read the first in this series, "Touch of Power", before reading this book. I would say that you don't really need to, however, there is a lot of interaction between the "team" of players that is subtle and now I really want to read Touch of Power.

This book starts off with Avry and Kerrick parting ways with very specific set goals to help fight against Tohon. There's a lot of unspoken coupleness about these two that tell you that you're missing a whole history between them.

There is a ton of action in this book! You have two points of view, mainly - Kerrick and Avry. You have different events occurring simultaneously and I didn't once feel as if there was a very boring lull and wanted to just page through to get to something.

I liked that Ms. Snyder has a lot of strong female characters. You don't have fluff; they are all, good ones and bad ones, strong capable women, powerful and power hungry, and aren't the simpering, fainting wallflowers. I've been a fan of Wonder Woman and strong female archetypes since I was a girl.

The ending was upsetting. Talk about a cliffhanger. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So, yes, I need to get the third book now. This is NOT a standalone.
